View Full Version : the box outside my property

it appears on istall of my virgin BB and tv last month that myself and my neighbour both share the samr box on the front wall of my property. this appears to be because when my neighbour had vm fitted they had a fully concrete drive so rather thanr unning cables above ground they just bridged into the box that was on our property.

the engineer said he was going to report it to be fixed but its not happened.

how will this affect my service. i have spoken to ym neighbour and it appears we both have lesser download speeds than we should. will this be contributing to this >? i shoudlbe getting 20mb but struggle to get more than 10. whereas he should be receiving 10mb and struggles to beat 6mb..

anyone ? suspecting this may be the cause of my other issues posted here./http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33648242-trace-routes-showing-problems-every-day.html

edit. asked my neighbour to do the same thing and his settings look identical other than the downstram receiver power level. i get 8.5 where as he only receives 0.5 ?

Hi, just to confirm I am Mofokk's neighbor sharing the same box and also experience similar problems, I'll quote KK's results for ease and post mine below.

Your levels are fine too. Your downstream power level is better than your neighbours, but his shows no cause for concern.

I'll also add, that I am using a 10 db Attenuator on my line and KK is not, dunno if that helps.

cheers.

ok so our signals look ok as per connection strength ?,

but will be be effecting our maximum speeds we can obtain as we are basically sharing the line ?.

doesnt appear to be. neither of us reach max speed tbh. but does anyone these days *sigh*

Go to
http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/?C=S;O=D
Download a file, take note of the transfer rate, go back to the page and start a 2nd download, take note of the transfer rate on each and add them together, come back and tell us what speed you got on the single file and what speed you got on each file when downloading 2 files at the same time.

And yes I get full speed all of the time on 20Mb.

thanks.

single file downloads at 1.1mbps this was at 3pm uk time. so should be reasonably quiet too.

when trying to download 2 files at once they steady out at 900 and 650kb/sec with one boucing up to 1.1mbps every now and again.

i know this doesnt sound so bad but its not what i pay for. and at peak times ( i will post results from the same test at peak time tonight ) i know this speed will be halved easily.

thanks for your reply.

ok as promised. another attempt at downloading 2 demo's from the link provided above. one solo. then 2 @ once.

downloading of 1 demo = 480 to 600 KB/sec fluctuates .

downloading of the demo above plus one more at the same time.

demo 1= 420KB/sec demo 2= 230 KB/sec

WAY below maximum speed. to make sure i hadn't breached my download quota ( i let one of the demo's download complete earlier) i also ran multiple speed tests from various sites.

all report my speed around 5675kpbs down and 724 kpbs up. upload proves im not capped iirc.

so i think somthing may well be wrong here.

I'd say there is, you need to speak to technical support via phone or the newsgroups.
