Hi everyone

My first post on here need some advice please.I am thinking of going wireless and wanted to know if i should buy a router from VM or get one from a PC shop:confused:

what?

if you're not overly computer minded it may be best to purchase direct from vm (with the wireless adapter as well) which will give you free technical assistance.
it also gaurantees compatibility with the services provided for you.

it may however be cheaper to buy one from elsewhere if you have a general comp knowledge as they are not that complicated to set up and you always have support on here for any issues you have.

in other words it down to personal choice.

(if you get the vm one just dont install their wireless manager program, which causes a lot of problems.)

Have to disagree with you on that one - the Wireless Manager does not cause any problems in my experience. It can have some problems with unsupported adapter - but it hasn't been tested with them.

The wireless manager program may not "Cause" any problems, but the 1st thing I do on a wireless call is get rid of it as it "IS" a royal pain, it is far easier to let Windows manage the connection.;)

Until the user forgets the passphrase....

a reset of the router, resetting all info & connecting to new name takes on average 5 mins (both on cable & national) and will work.

All you need to do is log into the router if they forget their passphrase using 192.168.1.1 using the username >virgin< and the passphrase of >password< and then reset it in the the Netgear wireless settings 2/3 minutes job done.

That is assuming that they didn't change the password for logging into the Router;)

I know but that is something I never let them do if taking them through set up and it does not tell them how to on the disk.

I have had someone lock themselves out of the modem config by changing the password so we could not check the power levels on the call.

I just got a Belkin N1 from Argos, they are on sale reduced from £69.99 to £39.99. Was up and running in minutes, no problems at all connecting PC, Wii, Laptop and Ipod Touch.

Would recommend this if your Argos have any in stock.

If you have changed the password for logging into the router (i have), what happens when you do a full reset of the router (pin hole). Does that password still stay valid or does it revert back to default.

It should reset everything to default settings, including the login password.

I believe the Netgear ones can have trouble with the Nintendo Wii so worth thinking about if you play that console.
