off the top of me 'ed it sounds like STM, with a 50% drop off in speed
For details look here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

Does this only happen between 4PM and 9PM? I could be wrong, but you may be getting STM'd for going over a download limit in that time.

the easiest way to find out is to look at what your upload speed. Visit www.speedtest.net and do a speedtest and look at your upload speed.
If it's around 256kb/s you're not STM'd and if it's around 128 kb/s you're STM'd

That's been happening for over a year. It's shocking that some customers still don't know about this.

what's your upload speed? Are you sure it's STM, as its been constant for 3 weeks.

Hi Noggo.I just done that speed test thing and got these results. Thanks

For some reason the horse racing I stream is slow on 120kbs but at 240kbs which i pay for was good.

I don't think it's STM with 55 kb/s upload speed.
goto http://192.168.100.1/ and look at your modem config pages, you should see one marked `Signal' go there and post the info on that page (power levels down and up stream and Signal to noise ratio for downstream). Someone will probably tell you if there's a problem with the figures.

Other than that get in touch with tech support, which you can do two ways. By telephone or newsgroup support and if you don't want to spend hours on the phone I suggest you try VM's newsgroup support.

For how to setup outlook express for newsgroups:
http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/newsgroups/setting-up.php
and the group you need to subscribe to is:
virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

Post on the above newsgroup with a description of your problems and see what they're got to say on the matter.

Any1 please advise how to look at the signal levels on the STB thingy? (I'm assuming you can look at the levels)

Settings, number 6 (technical stuff), then page through with the red button.

You do not get downstream level, but if the SNR and error rates look good, the level is probably ok.
You do see the upstream level, and trying to remember, is 55 the critical level, at which the upstream power is maxed-out?

Other thing, is the event logs, if it's stacking up anything that looks bad.

revolt1,
Have you had a chance to look at the levels yet, as Matth pointed out the method of looking up the values and also mentioned looking at the event log too.

Hi,

Also seeing this problem in SO31 area. First noticed it over the weekend. Usually have no problem. My levels look good. Wonder if the STM has gone mad.

Cheers,

Steve.

I have been. However, just plugged in my SACM to the cable network and although it still does not work I am now getting my 2Mb out the STB. Strange coincidence maybe.

Will get around to getting VMCS to fix my SACM as and when the upgrade to 10Mb comes along.

You have to call Tech Support to get your modem added to your account.

And how would YOU make sure everyone knew about it?
