Hi people :)
I've not posted on here for a good while but i'm wondering if anyone else is having problems in Bristol BS5 area for connection? Mine seems to be so irratic this past week or two and it's really annoying me.
I still think i should be offered a new modem, i'm still on the SB400i or w/e back from my telewest days, they refuse to give me a new one though 'cause apparently "It's fine" =_=';
Modem Stats:
Downstream Frequency 338750000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
Power Level 5 dBmV
Channel ID 2
Upstream Frequency 22200000 Hz Ranged
Power Level 35 dBmV
My upstream is generally fine but my down is always all over the place, i seem to get throttled alot even when i've not downloaded anything *sigh*
Speedtest:
Wed, 25 Feb 2009 00:00:32 GMT
Test 1: 1024K took 4459 ms = 229.6 KB/sec, approx 1892 Kbps, 1.85 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 6626 ms = 154.5 KB/sec, approx 1273 Kbps, 1.24 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 6504 ms = 157.4 KB/sec, approx 1297 Kbps, 1.27 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 10604 ms = 193.1 KB/sec, approx 1591 Kbps, 1.55 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1513 Kbps, 1.48 Mbps

20MB BB at it's greatest :td:
Any help appreciated / comments!
Thanks.

hi,

I've recently moved to Bs6 and i'm getting around 2mbps from my 20MB connection.

I rang Tech support last night and was told that ther is s aproblem with the server which is being investigated. They gave me no ETA for a fix and couldn't give me any more info about the problem. They didn't even ask me to do a speed test of get my modem status.

They did credit my account tho.

It's been happening since we had VM installe which was 2 weeks ago. Even the engineer who installed it said our signal stength was poor and it shouldn't be working!

If someone can tell me how to get the Modem status i'll post it up with a couple of speedchecks.

Your modem is off frequency click this link below and change the frequency to 339000000 click save changes and then click restart cable modem and that should improve your connection. http://192.168.100.1/config.html

Then click here to check if your modem requires replacing http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/current_service_20MB.html

Yup i had exactly the same, sans the 'credit' compensation. They had a problem with the hub in the street giving the correct amount of decibels needed for a proper 20mb connection in my case... which apparently got fixed, heh yea right.
During peak hours i'm constantly throttled to 5mb's whether i've downloaded anything or not, really... paying for a 20mb connection and getting 5mb's worth is rediculous. Bristol seems so over subscribed too yet... we're the ones paying for it.

Thank you, i will try the frequency you suggested now and check the link provided, will edit with update :)

Update: Tested your frequency several times Moldova, it actually runs slower for me on that frequency but thanks anyway. As for the 'if you need an upgrade' link, it requires me to put in all my details as if i'm changing my package? So i didn't go through with it, if you would know personally i have a Motorola SB4200i modem, thanks. :)

All the link does is order you a new modem and it requires your account number to do so otherwise it cannot process the order.

Does this cost Moldova? Or would you be issued a new one for free if your modem is within a certain line of old models?
Thanks for the reply :)

KFF - try changing the frequency to 331MHz, if the issue relates to loading on the 339MHz frequency 331 might be a bit less full.

Modem is free, so long as they say you can have one.

Thanks :) will try that now and let you know how it works out. As for the "Modem is free, so long as they say you can have one." i guess i don't fall under that category with my SB4200i, last time i asked customer care, strangely all 3 of the people had the "same modem" as me and it "worked fine with 20mb BB" lol.. :p:
- KFK.

Update: On Freq. 331Mhz the modem Send light just continually blinks, it won't get past this point, thanks for the suggestion though :)

If the link says we need to replace your modem it is a free upgrade.

OK probably the CMTS looking at it going 'hrm you shouldn't be on 331, bugger off' and not letting you on, wasn't sure if it'd work as CMTS has you registered at 339 but no harm in trying ;)

I'm pretty sure you'd need the SB5xxx and above to be sure of good 20Mbit performance.

Upstream power is getting close to its most upper limit Subs.
Do you actually have a problem or are you just checking?

Happens quite often and if I try it does exactly the same to me requiring me to reset the original frequency.

You can only get the Ambit 256 from Virgin now.

@ Broadbandings, the 4200 is good for 20 megabitsings. I believe most older modems are being swapped out to the newer Ambit 256ings so if the OP calls the agent will be prompted to send a newer modem.

Hi xocemp,
yes, my connection is extremely slow. I pay for 20Mb but, as you can see from the tests below i'm not even getting 1Mb!

Download #1
------------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 1.0 MB (1048576 bytes)
Total time taken : 66.64 seconds (66639 milliseconds)
Throughput : 15.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.01 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 120.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 0.12 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Download #2
------------------------------------------------------------------
File size transferred : 1.0 MB (1048576 bytes)
Total time taken : 35.02 seconds (35019 milliseconds)
Throughput : 29.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.03 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 232.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 0.23 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

any help would be greatly appreciated, Virgin have been pretty useless so far.

Thanks

The flash screen includes every modem up to the EPC2100 so covers all Motorola modems.

Sadly it doesn't cover the EPC2100 rev1.
Which given it can't do 20meg is a bit daft.

Plus you have to check one or more has not already been sent by our "friends", I think 11 is the record up to now, when calling for outage updates.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of update. I've been havin' a case of the sniffles (manflu!) and not had a chance to contact VM yet. That being said, slowly my net has been returning to a more normal level, i hope this was just a one off thing but i'm still going to request a new modem and try to find out how oversubscribed my area is.
I'll let you know what happens :)

Hi everyone :)
Just a small update to let you all know, after bangin' on to VM countless times i've now recieved a new modem and they have properly checked and repaired the problem with the network in my street.
Really annoying how all this took so long but! it has all been fixed now, i'm using the Ambit 256 Modem and getting a realiable 18/19 megs worth of connection, even seen it hit the actual 20meg mark -faints- :p:
So i just wanted to say thanks for all your help and pm's with my problems, kept me determined to make them fix it :D
