Hoping somebody can point me in the right direction here.
Am on 20MB connection and all has been well for some time.
Recently have been getting wild fluctuations with downstream speed.
Only use speed tests as a very rough guide but here is what is happening.
Boot PC and check speed. This ranges between 3 - 4MB download.
Power off modem and power back on and let settle.
Test speed and back up to around 18MB. After a short while speed drops back again until I reboot modem. Sometimes improves during the day by itself.
Tested again this morning about 10 o'clock and still doing the same.
Am running Vista but also have XP installed on a second drive and get same results using that.
Modem is an NTL200 and all signal levels are as they should be. PC is hard wired to modem so no router involved.
Am not using P2P and PC is virus and malware free.
Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have you tried a different cat5 cable?

Also, can you try a different NIC?

Will try another cat5 cable and do have a new NIC I can try in place of the onboard one.
If I install the separate NIC should I disable the onboard one in BIOS?

Modem could be off frequency.

Connect direct to the modem and disable the NIC in Network connections no need to go into the BIOS.

Post back if the is any change.

All swapped over to new NIC and cat5 cable with old network disabled in connections.
As before all fine with speeds around the 18MB for around 15 - 20 minutes now back to the 2 - 3MB speed.
One good piece of news is following a link from another thread have applied for a modem swap as my NTL200 says needs upgrading.
Would still like to get to the bottom of why this is happening though.
