Bird Box / House

Hello,

Her indoors wants to put up a couple of bird boxes up in the garden, but right in the corner of the fence.

There is a nice post which I can drill into but it needs to go at a 45 degree angle becuase of the roof that comes out from the side.

Now - I thought I could get a piece of large 6" wooden post and cut corner to corner so I get two triangular pieces of wood which I could then screw into the corner and would also give me a nice flat base to hang the box from.

Anybody got any other ideas how I can mount them up?

Grab one of those metal arm type things that you hang hanging baskets up with, then suspend the bird box from the bottom of it (put one of those screw eye things in the top of the bird box).

Failing that, cut a bit of treated wood so that you've got a shelf that fits into the corner, mount the edges of the shelf to the two bits of fence, then stand/screw the bird box on top of the shelf.

I'm not good at DIY, but that's how I would probably do it.

The only point I would like to raise is that if the boxes are that close to a fence then they will most probably be where cats can reach and birds don't like that.

Those two boxes will attract different species and if you place them close together you might end up with territorial fighting. The box with the larger opening would be better placed high below the eaves if you can manage it as it will probably attract starlings or sparrows, alternatively if you site it low down on any part of your fence under the cover of bushes or hedge then you might get robins using it.

Also make sure the bird boxes are south facing, they like a little heat when they are young, with them being south facing they'll get the heat of the sun all day.
