Thats' 2MBit you should have around 10MBit at full speed

Which speed test did you use as a lot are simply NOT accurate..

Try the one found at the top of the site (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php).. Or try the one at think broadband (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html)

Also check your modem config file at http://192.168.100.1 Username/password = root and tell us your data rates

Please try not to take offence. But that has to be one of the worst speed tests ever. My pings are well over 500ms even though I get 19MBit.

If that were true then I would never be able to use the Net for gaming..

As anything over 200ms is causes disconnection from servers..

I have to admit though Gaming has been absolutly **** poor on xbox live using Virgin.. My friends think I'm making it up because I'm on 20Mbit and there on 2Mbit ADSL.. There gaming is perfect..yet mine is :td:

They are useless... Absolute full of bull.

I even lied to them one evening and told them that the google page took 3 mins to refresh.. They said THAT was fine...

P.s this is 20Mbit https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/02/19.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

So your 10mbit SHOULD be around 10048kbps NOT 2053kbps

Sorry but it is a speed test and not a ping/latency test....

;)

Speedtest.net is absolutley pathetic for consistency..There's a good article on CF's news section detailing VM's official line regarding speed tests..

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/414/virgin-media-tests-the-testers

Though for many a period VM stressed that NO speed test was accurate and that only concurrent downloads from thier FTP servers added together would indicate your true speed..

As for 10Mb you should get either about 10000Kb or round about 1.2MB dependant on which units the speed tests display in..

2053 is 2Mb, as I said access your modem on http://192.168.100.1 with a username/password of root and if it's a 250/255/256 modem check the config pages and post your upstream/downstream data rates..I'm asking you to do that as it might be that you're not on the 10Mb you think you are and that will enable us to confirm..

Hi - was wondering if any one else was getting crippled during "peak" hours. I understand that during peak hours, the will be some drop in download speeds, but to be getting 1 meg on a 20meg service is madness - is anyone else getting this king of service from Virgin Media?

hi thanxs for your help:)

The engineer won't install the modem to the router, that's upto you to do. but it is as simple as pluging the router into the modem, and the PC into the router, first turn on the modem and let it boot, then turn on the router and then turn on the PC. The router should gets it's IP from the modem and the PC's from the router..

Just to add to Kymmy, you'll probably need to restart the modem, too.

That speed test was written by our (now seemingly ex-) member Robin Walker, and hacked by Paul M to be more accurate at higher speeds (the original wasn't accurate at speeds of 10 meg or over).

It works by downloading a (I believe) 1 meg file four times and uses a javascript-based timer to time the download. It does not, and was never intended to, test pings.

It is also hosted within Virgin's network, so can help determine if the problem is within Virgin's network, or it is within one of their links to the internet.

One program that I find to be more accurate than most speedtesters (including the one we host) is Dan Elwells Broadband speed test (http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/). This is more accurate because it uses a program to simulate and time various actions on various servers in this country, Europe and America. Sadly, it seems it is no longer actively developed though.

Most accurate test is probably virgin medias game servers and download a large patch.

http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

Or download microsofts xp sp2 network install as again this is a large file.

Speedtest sites tend to get used a lot a give unreliable results.

Personally after being with several isp's a good calculation is for every 100kbps down that is 1mb. I am on the 20mb virgin and this i must say is on a good day, normaly i get about 1950kbps worst i recorded was 1580kbps. Over half a 1424mb movie done in 6 min.

A decent newsgroup server is a good indicator of achievable speed
