I've been thinking of getting it to go with my Samsung NC10 netbook, 1gig a month should be enough for occasional out door surfing.

Just got off the phone (went via 150), as an existing customer of the L Broadband I can have the 1Gig for £5 a month on a 12 month contract. So I signed up for it, you have to pay £4.88 postage for the dongle and as it's a separate entity you'll be billed by Virgin Mobile. They'll ask for a credit card to pay for that postage and will run a credit check to confirm.

Confirmation e-mail arrived:
"We've just taken payment of £4.88 for your Virgin Mobile order. You're all settled up!
As soon as we've put your order in the post, we'll email you to let you know. If you have any enquiries in the meantime, feel free to contact our team using the details at the bottom of this email."

I'll report back once it's arrived and I've given it a test run, have you checked signal strength in your area to see if you can receive a signal.

The dongle arrived this morning via UPS. It installed without any problems on my Samsung NC10 running Win 7 Beta. I haven't had a chance to take it out for a walk as yet.

It's been fine so far, haven't been very far out of town as yet, the signal in town has been good and download speed is good. I bought a little adaptor to turn the dongle sideways (see pic).

Yes, I rang 150 and explained that I wanted to buy Mobile Broadband, after checking my details I was passed on to Virgin Mobile. It was explained to me that Virgin Mobile are a separate entity so I needed to give them Credit Card details so they could charge postage (the dongle comes via UPS) and arrange the direct debit. My friend who signed up a few days later had to put up with them trying to up sell him a phone, I didn't get that.

If you go over your limit you're charged £15/Gig on a pro rata basis, about 715kb per penny (if my maths is right, which I doubt).

My "3" dongle only works with Windows and won't work with linux which was pre-installed on my older Eee PC.

Not sure if the Virgin dongle has the same problem.

Maybe try running it in Wine ??

also download the Huawei un-customised manager (http://www.dc-unlocker.com/uploud/uploud/uploads/Mobile_Partner_11.030.01.07.03.zip)

this takes away all the 3 branding and gives you more options. that should work with any Huawei modem.

my 3 dongle has been doing good and ive also managed to unlock it to use my o2 sim so if i aint got 3 signal i can get o2 !

The adaptor came from ASSA Tech on e-bay, if you type "USB 2 360º Adapter" into e-bay you'll find it, it's the only listing. They're £3.98 plus £2.75 postage, each additional item was only an extra 25p postage so I bought a few of them for friends.

Orientation of the dongle hasn't made a difference so far, but I haven't been out of town with it yet and signal strength is 5 bar everywhere I've been.

Just out of curiosity guys what speed do u get with the Virgin dongle?.... My Vodafone gives me a speed of about 2.5meg... its almost identical to my old 2 meg cable connection. :)

Got mine today running at about 2.2Meg in North Coventry indoors, not bad I suppose for a mobile connection. Not tried it anywhere else yet but the City and some of it surrounding towns and villages seem to be very much covered.

For five quid a month a nice little addition and good price for internet access when out and about. You wouldn't want to use it everyday as I can't see 1Gig going far. Great for those occasional journeys away and great to take on holiday or weekends away.
