Hi I just called up and asked to upgrade my broadband from 2mb to 20mb. The lady on the phone said it should be available straight away all i need to do is unplug my cable modem and reconnect it and it will be 20 mb.

how do I got about checking it. I have the modem connected to a wireless cable router.

Click the speed test link at the top of this page. ;)

Does not seem to go over 5mb going up and down every time I do a test.

I have the modem connected to a wireless cable router.

What result does the speed test give when connected directly from the modem to the PC?

Hmmm ... well, have a go at http://www.speedtest.net/, that's pretty reliable.

Test 1: 1024K took 438 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 421 ms = 2432.3 KB/sec, approx 20042 Kbps, 19.57 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 438 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 844 ms = 2426.5 KB/sec, approx 19994 Kbps, 19.53 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 19641 Kbps, 19.18 Mbps

Directly connected from PC to Modem. It still seems to be jumping between 14 to 19mb

When I tried speedtest it gave me 19mb everytime. now to try it with my router.

When I connect my modem to router I only get 5 with another laptop connected wirelessly. I then turn wifi off on that laptop and get 7 mb any ideas?

May be the router can't support 20Meg. What make / model is it and may be someone will know.

safecom SWBR-5400 cable router

how do I find out if it supports 20meg i just thought if it had RJ45 connector it could handle up to 100MB and that the modem was the only thing that may not be compatible.

I found this

this is probably most reliable.http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

This one seems fine for me

There’s definitely something wrong with the router or may be the router settings, if you can only get 7Mb when wired and 5Mb when wireless. I don't know enough about router settings to be able to advise you what to check for.

May be start a new thread off asking in the networking section http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87/ or get this thread moved?

Thanks Noggo I might just start a new thread.

I meant to say that I get 7MB and 5mb when wireless I have not tried a wired connection from router to pc. I might try that first then post a new thread if I'm still have the problem.

that ones a really old model and apparently known to be slow
http://search.virginmedia.com/results/?q=slow%20Safecom%20SWBR%205400%20Router

id bet its internal CPU is a really weak thing, and it just cant keep up with anywere near the data flow processing.....of even 10/20Mbit

your right that many people assume if its got a 10/100 fast ethernet connection/switch on it,so it can do 100Mbit/s

many 11g wired switchs cant come close though, its all down to the power of the internal CPU/SOC running it all, give it to much data to process and its always going to slow down just like a PC thats asked to do to much work, turning off your wireless part seems to prove the weak internal CPU/SOC point.....its a BOM (bill of materials)thing to save a few pennys on mass production, put a slower cheaper CPU/SOC on there and make more money.

your better off going out and buying even a cheap 11n today, many of those also have 10/100 fast ethernet, but the CPUs beefier as its speced to cope with the far faster 11n data throughput and realtime encyption/Decryption of the newer security option etc, the 10/100/1000(1gig) 11n wireless 11n routers with their gigabit switchs are your best bet for consistant higher throughput though...

hell even the VM 11n with its 10/100 switch SOC will serve you better than most 11g's today...

you appear to be on the 20MBit as per the post above but you can double check the modem on http://192.168.100.1 root:root etc and see your current NTL255/VM250 modem down/up speeds setting...

So both 7 and 5Mb are wireless speedtests :). Aye, try it wired and see what speed you get.

You might want to try Netstumbler software to find what wireless channels are used in your neighbourhood and choose one that doesn't overlap or overlap as much. Look here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34704804-post7.html and download here: http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/

When it was wired I got 20mb

I've posted a new post here. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/19/33645302-time-for-an-upgrade.html

I tried netstumbler and strangely when I use the software that came with the adaptor it does not show any other networks I then Used the default windows zero config service and found some other networks.

I'm on channel 11 the only other network is on channel 1. Netstumbler is reporting my network as using WEP and the channel says 11+ then changes to 11* and then back to + again and just keeps doing that. The grpah seems to go up and down and have blank spaces as well. I tired other channels but none of the others seem to connect.
