Anyone else around Solihull suffering high PLOSS?

I know a mate close who's not got the issue but I'm getting like 15%, hard to play online ect.

Any ideas on what might be causing the issue?

D-Link G510
Win Vista x64

Can we assume that PLOSS isn't some horrible fungle disease?

I'm guessing you mean packet loss?

Yes, unless you have nightmares of green bogey-men chasing you around town?

Problem could be:

Your setup - I'm assuming you're using wireless, by the fact you mention d-link G150 PCI card - Wireless isn't very good for gaming. Try direct PC to cable modem and retest. This will eliminate two things from the equation, 1st wireless and 2nd the router altogether.
Make sure there are no loose connections on the VM coax cable, at both junction box inside the house and at cable modem end (unlikely but worth checking).
Cable Modem - Post your power, SNR levels etc, remember EDIT OUT any IP, serial and MAC #'s. Someone's bound to reply if there's a problem with any of the levels
The card you're connected to at the UBR, may suffer from high TX loads peak times. This will also show up as poor download speeds - post on VM's newsgrounp support for any issues.
The problem may be off VM’s network, have you done any trace route tests to find out where the packet loss is occurring. Try Ping Plotter software, standard version on free trail.

OK, so you have to stop on wireless, at some point you'll have to eliminate the router and go hardwired to modem. Have you got a laptop or move your PC retest.

Try Netstumbler software to find what wireless channels are used in your neighbourhood and choose one that doesn't overlap or overlap as much. Look here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34704804-post7.html

Not up to speed on power level stuff, but from the guide here http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/26006-cable-modem-signal-levels.html the ideal downstream is +/- 3dBmV. Yours is +5dBmV and cause for concern is +8dBmV. May be someone else could shed some light onto whether or not is OK for an old Surfboard modem.

What about trace routes, do they show up where the packet loss is occuring? Post a trace route test.

All fine on the modem apart from that the upstream power level is pretty low.

Eliminating wireless from equation would be good, what could be done to prove if it's wireless or not is to ping the router.

I had a brief period of packet loss myself last night, traced to VM network, seems fine again this morning.

I cant stop on wireless though, I'm all the way upstairs and other people use the network.

Will try NetStumbler and do some Trace route tests.

Thanks
:)

EDIT: NetStumbler doesn't like my D-Link card, apparently its unsupported.

Aren’t you going to trigger STM quite quickly with a few people using the connection? It’s only 500MB download and 200MB upload peak time 4-9pm and once STM has been triggered, you’re only got 1Mb/s download and 128Kb/s upload. I wouldn’t think there’s a lot of room to play with on that connection with a few people using it.

Do you know if you’re triggering STM or not?
