Just wondering why:
Me and a friend who live in different areas, were comparing results on a speedtest site and his speeds were higher even though we are both on 20MB virgin cable.
I said it must be false reading, and to look at his modem config file and paste what it says...
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 1080000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

My maximum upstream data rate is 768000, is there any reason for these to be different when we are on the same service ?
It does seem like one too many '0's on the figures but he insists thats exactly as he pasted it.

Doesn't look like too many zeros - where is your friend in the country, perhaps this is an alternate profile they are playing with, 1.08Mbit upstream, seems an odd number though!

He is not too many miles from northampton.
When doing upload speed teasts, he gets 1MB or more, whereas I get 650-700kbps which is still pretty good and about normal id say (im in lincoln).
We are both using ambit 256, and both on 20MB. My modem file says max upstream data 768000.

Perhaps this is a sign of things to come for Virgin... if they increase it to something a little more I might start paying attention to them. (I'd be with an ADSL provider if I had a phone line, cable's the only way to get broadband in my digs.)

I live in Northampton and I just did a speed test and I got 5Mb on my 20Mb connection.

It very rarely gets above 10Mb, I am getting pretty sick of it. They need to sort something out!

So just drop your package, downgrade to 10meg and save money.

I am just worried that if I drop to 10Meg I will get even worse speeds

The only 20Mb VM cable service that has a 1Mb upload speed is the NTLTelewest business package...

The 10Mb business line also has a higher upload speed compared to the 500Kb of the residential..My modem shows the following:

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 769000

DJ Nick which UBR are you on in Lincoln ?:)

Im not sure sorry, If you explain exactly how I can find out I will.
I am connected to cpc2-linc6xxxx.nott.cable.ntl.com if that helps.
I only get about 10MB 80% of the time (my download speed), my upload speed is usually around 650kbps so pretty ok.
Speedtest done 2 mins ago (bbmx speedtest) shows me as 9.8MBps downspeed.
Could you shed any light on this as well as my friends higher modem file limits ?
Thanks

Go right down to the 2meg (what I chose), it's always rock solid. One of the reasons why the talk on the other thread about them "upgrading" (term used loosely) concerns me.
