Just wondering what type of ping I should be getting, since December when Virgin announced 50mb my 20mb connection seems to have dropped off.

On a good day I might but its random get 18mb but this is through the day, as a rule my connection jumps from around 3-10mb there are no set times and it doesn't matter if its peek hours or not.

I haven't gone over my amount to DL getting capped either. I know there has been problems with the newsgroups I sometimes get 4.5k/s the other day I got 2mb for about 10 mins then it dropped to 75k/s.

but more than not these days I usually only get 1mb down, random tests on Speednet show my ping sometimes 8 other times 50+.

Is there a way to check if the area is over subscribed without calling them?

Latency depends where you're pinging. Pinging bbc.co.uk just now gives me 31ms average.

Please post signal levels from your modem. Visit http://192.168.100.1/ (username: root, password: root).

To find out about your area post on the virginmedia.support.broadband.cable newsgroup: http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/newsgroups/

There was an issue with newsgroups a couple of weeks ago and we all suffered from non-existant speeds but it had been fixed now. I downloaded 60gb the other night without breaking a sweat. I get a ping of 13ms on speedtest.net. As for your connection speeds, i don't know what would be causing it because 50mbit runs on a different now and they havent started to move the 20mbits over so technically it shouldn't make any difference at all.

What are your speeds like when downloading two simultaneous large files from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/. Just add up the transfer rates together and this will be your download speed.

The top two files shown in the picture below add up to 2.3 M Bytes/s (which is around 18.4 M bits/s). Depending on how fast the files are downloading this could also be displayed in KB/s as well). If you need an easy way to convert MBytes/s to Mbits/s just place it in the google search box and hit the search button eg: " 2.3MB/s to Mb/s " and the answer from google calculator wil be displayed at the top of the new page.

Two ways:-

As Chickendippers as mentioned, post a message on Virgin Media's newsgroup support.
Post your Location and or your UBR info (remove any IP info though) and rely on forum members connected to the same UBR, to give you what info they have on the status.
