Came back to Find my Modem (Sb4100) with only one light on - Receive and no connection. I called the Status line and not much was really said, later I connected a wireless ADSL Connection and managed to get the status page showing:

http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/serviceissue.do?ticket=870422

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2008/12/13.png

Now one thing I noticed straight away - when I looked at this - It was not even 18:39 yet the thing said:

Time Stamp 21/12/2008 18:39

My Guess is Virgin system has not had thee clocks changed as of yet but the real question - will they fix this tonight and will they ever update the ticket as 4 hours has passed. Do I call up? Will it help?

I'd call them. The SB4100 is a rather elderly modem, and has problems dealing with speeds of 10 meg or 20 meg. It also apparently has trouble on some parts of the network.

See http://www.chetnet.co.uk/articles/index.php?page=index_v2&id=91&c=4

(chetnet is owned by a former NTL network engineer, who ran several beta tests for NTL).

I'd give VM a call.

I agree it is old but has coped with both 10/20mbit fine - I am sure in fact it can range all the way to 38mbit if I am not mistaken. The problem is, as its a area wide fault and not my side, I am not sure what a call would do and if they have 4 hours to fix it - they have failed.

the SB4100 was on list of modems to be swapped to cope with 20 meg.
If you have the XL package, you should've got it swapped ages ago :/

Do you know anyone else in your area who is also still having the fault? It's entirely possible that in fixing the fault, the engineer did something that is causing your modem problems..

The specs of the modem state that it can go all the way to 38meg, and, it probably can, in theory.

However, VM have clearly found that it cannot be relied upon to maintain high speeds, hence them not supporting it at those high speeds.

I would advise that you phone them and check.

Apart from people on here who are from this area - not off hand - I am guessing they cannot get online to post due to having no connection (I am using a ADSL Line to post this).

I can confirm that I get the full 10mbit speed and 20mbit when I was on that serivce using the SB4100 and no reason to swap this unless I want to move to 50mbit, the 20mbit thing was fixed by way of a firmware upgrade some time ago on this model and has lasted me some 8+ years I think now.

I have just called support (india) and the fault is Area wide and will be fixed in 4 hours from now, they have done 90% of the work he claims and will be online soon :)
