See here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a138584/virgin-to-migrate-10mb-20mb-to-docsis-3.html

If they're giving out swish new cable modems to all 50Mbps customers, will they not have to give them to all 10 and 20Mbps customers too? Or is the swish new modem just for show - and the current Ambit black modems can also do DOCSIS 3.0 with a download?

I'm mostly wondering as I've had a static IP address for as long as I've had the connection and I run a mail server over the connection, and if they send a download the headend kit might give the modem a new IP address resulting in 24 hours of DNS issues!

All of the current 20Mbit modems (and most of the others) can be switched onto the new network remotely, but will be running DOCSIS 2, not DOCSIS 3

So when they do make the change, customers shouldn't have to do a thing

They shouldnt have to however your IP can change at anytime as they are only limited to the lease, have you never rebooted your modem?

simple answer, no you wont need a new modem, those on 20 and 10 are not using docsis 3

they are going to be using DOCSIS 2.0

The chances are when your lease expires you get the same ip anyway, they arn't static though.

So folk with older modems will be on DOCSIS 2.0? Will that be part of the new network, or is the "old" network being fully migrated to DOCSIS 2.0?

When you're moved onto the local 10k and the new platform you'll get a new IP address I'm afraid. It may even happen sooner as part of other upgrades.

Ah well, worse things have happened. What's the local 10k - part of the new platform? I'm not too fussed, as long as it improves things long term.

Is there a list of dates for rollover somewhere?

I have no idea about a list. I'm sure there is one, but you and I aren't privvy to it!
