Hi

well on the 8MB service I never got above 4 MB - often it was about 3.6 to 3.8

Now its gone up to 16MB

and I only occasionally get above 8MB - often in the late 7s ?

Question : while I'm quite happy with speed increase I don't really see why I should have to pay any more when the 'trial' is over as I'm only now getting the 8MB I'm supposed to have

Can I ask Virgin NOT to make the £5 charge if and when they think of doing so and continue with what is only 8MB ?

If you are on up to 16Mbit, then you on the C&W network which is completely seperate to the BT based one.

Which means the only factor in the speeds should be line length and noise, as the capacity is completely seperate

If your only getting 4 Mb/s or below from 8Meg, my bet is that you must be around 3km from the exchange.

You're paying £18 / month for upto 8Meg and once your free trial is over £23 / month. If others are available on your exchange switch to a cheaper ISP. Have a look at O2 upto 8Meg for £12.23 / month, £14.68 / month for upto 16Meg or £ 19.57 / month for upto 20Meg http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/index.jsp

Look at https://www.simplifydigital.co.uk/
enter your postcode, uncheck `digital TV' and `Home phone' and hit enter, This will bring up most of the ADSL suppliers on your exchange. On the same page click `View full availability report' (near the top) this will give you your distance to your telephone exchange (small print under the map on right hand side)
