I was, for years, quite happy on the 2MB tier of service, but I decided to give 10MB a try, when the Xmas offer was announced.

First of all, my modem didn't want to accept the 10MB config file, but technical support solved it in the end.

Secondly, its just about useless for anything other than web browsing. If I try and play World of Warcrack, I get hit with HUGE pockets of lag, which never happend on the 2MB tier of service.

The same happens with downloading files, or anything that requires a constant throughput of packets. Laaaag pockkkketttsss.

Now before anyone asks me to post my modem stuff, let me pre-empt you and post it right away.

Upstream:
Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 2
Upstream Frequency : 22200000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 36.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Downstream:
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 2
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -1.2 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 39.5 dB

I believe those are within tolerance.

To be honest, the lag pockets are ****ing me off, to the extent I'm actually looking forwards to upgrading back to the 2MB tier.

You could always speak to Virgin early to cancel to 10M (as you're got to do this at some point away) and see tech support will change the config in your modem back to 2Meg ASAP.

The downgrade will be done once customer services raise the order

I'm going to give it a fair try, its only been 4 days. It could be a fluke, too soon to tell really.

I was more hoping somebody might suggest something that was causing the lag pockets. I doubt its spyware or viruses as I rarely use windows (World of Warcrack plays quite nicely in WINE), and when I have to use windows, I keep kaspersky up to date.

As the other uses for your broadband connection are also compromised, e.g. downloading, anything streaming etc. Try newsgroup support and see if there's any issues at the UBR end that may be affecting your conn like FEC errors, SNR problems, high TXloads etc.

Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz

thats look out to me shouldn't it be 331000000 or 339000000 correct me if i am wrong.

by the way have you got a Motorola modem? if yo have go to http://192.168.100.1/ and click configuration in the box named "Frequency" type in 339000000 then save then reboot if your not on a motorola modem http://192.168.100.1/gscan.asp change the frequency there to 339000000 if the modem reboots twice change it to 331000000 mine doesn't work on that it reboots twice but fine when i use 339000000

Not wrong if he's ex-NTL.
