the first one gets me 18ms

Well I get single figures pinging VMs DNS server and between 20 and 40 on level3s and about 20 on opendns however if I time nslookup bbc.co.uk then I get the following

VM server (default) 0:00.01
level3 server 0:00.02
opendns server 0:00.03

So opendns takes three times as long, but that said 2 hundredths of a second is still barely noticable.

4.2.2.1 to 4.2.2.6

Ping each one see which one gets the lowest ping.
The first two seem to go offline sometimes, I tend to stick to the later ones.

could some kind soul please explain to me in laymans terms why changing your dns setting can make a difference.

And is it possible to change them on my xbox 360 to the values stated above to see if it reduces ping, or improves online game playability. i have tried inputting VM's dns settings and didnt find any difference so i set it back to auto.

or can you only change them in your router config pages to have any effect

apologies for butting in guys just curious, the more i learn about this stuff the more interested i become, if this makes me a nerd then so be it :)

thanks in advance

ScrubIT (http://www.scrubit.com/)

Interesting concept. Thanks for the link.

Hmmm, Salt Lake City. Is this the Mormon DNS service?

;)

4.2.2.3

Level3's DNS server.

I use Treewalk DNS service on my local network with the Level3 as primary lookup.

DNS lookup is what changes something like "google.com" to a numeric address that computers can understand.
Each time you enter a website name into your browser it has to be converted to numeric by a call to a DNS server. So, a slow or unreliable DNS server can affect your browsing speed and reliability.

DNS is the system that converts domains like bbc.co.uk which is easy for people to remember to an ip address like 212.58.224.131 that your computer needs to find the server you are trying to contact. It will not affect ping times or gaming since it will only be done once (if at all) and once you have the ip address that is what will lbe used - it won't be looked up every time. Opendns also filters out phishing websites for you as does scrubit who also filter porn sites, though non filtered versions are available.

You can change the dns settings on individual devices or on your router, the latter will effectivly change all devices but the only thing it will generally improve is web browsing, but then only if your DNS queries are slow to start with.

Yeah, the best ones are 4.2.2.3 and 4.2.2.5, they seem to gives the lowest pings out of the 6.

Apologies, I have a daughter so I have set DNS through router. While she is still a child I like her mind to be as a child and I hope not tainted by some sites content. You guys know what I mean, right? ;)

sorry DiaNasty forgot to include you in the reply :o:, so many thanks to you also:D

So if this is all DNS does, why do think you have the facility to alter it on the xbox set up menu, its not like i can surf the net on my console

The xbox needs to be able to look up sites to find updates and where servers are etc, it could use the ip address for xboxlive.com etc but they might change

I'd suggest you don't try 4.2.2.4 even though it's in the group.

I just tried a traceroute on that.. It routes through London, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt before finally arriving at the nameserver !!

4.2.2.3 is much better, Level3 London in 11 hops for me.
