i have just upgraded my virgin internet connection to 10mb and have a few questions.

modem - sbc5100 surfboard
router - netgear wgr614 v7

- is this modem suitable for 10mb speed, i think that it is capable or 20mb.

- do i need to upgrade the router. the router runs at 54bps.

- what is the best wireless card for my desktop pc to utilise the connection
speed.

many thanks, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Modem is fine, I think you will find the router run at 54 Mbps which is fine too.

Any wireless g adapter should be ok - a usb one on a usb extension cable can minimise interference from the PC itself.

just to confirm the router running at 54mbps will get the most out of the 10mb connection

thanks for the quick response

The router will max out the VM 20mb connection so you will be fine with 10mb. I couldn't comment on the modem though.

Yes, since it is actually faster, some things can cause it to slow down but you can generally fix them.

ok the next question regarding wireless pci cards.

is there any point buying a card that runs at 108mbps, or just get one at 54mbps.

cheers

Not really unless you want to upgrade your router at some point to 108mbps. Draft N technology is more expensive but can provide better signal ranges if your PC is a long distance to the router. I run G at home and get a decent connection everywhere. If you get into the realms of that you may want to consider a home plug setup, instead of wireless.
