Just been shopping in the local Tescos and was wondering around the Home baking section looking for sunflower seeds as I tend to bake bread at home and my other half just loves them in and on top of the bread. Now for the last 18 months I've been buying these from Tesco's every week for prices ranging from 22p to 27p per 100g.

Imagine my shock today when as I went to grab the usual couple of packs I noticed the new price of 98p per 100g (exactly the same pack) which is an increase of nearly 300%..

Anyone noticed any other rediculous price increases????

Can't say I've noticed anything quite as bad as that - I suppose a poor harvest and/or a greater emphasis on the production of sunflower oil could be partly to blame.....

About a month ago Asda 415g of tinned salmon was 80p.

Now £1.58

5 Months ago a kilo block of cheeze was £3. Then it was reduced in size by 300g to 700g for £3. About 2 weeks ago went up from £3 to £3.75

Asda own brand frozen pizzas was 3 for £3 now 3 for £4
Asda chunky chicken 435g was 57p a tin. Now 81p a tin
Asda own brand tinned dogs was 23p. Now 44p

My question is. When the price of oil was sky high. That was used as an excuse for price increases. When the price of oil was falling dureing the summer it was going up in price. Now it is at a very low price. My question is why is food still going up by very high price increases.?

I no longer buy these products and I wonder why :(

I am not going to quote prices, but amongst items that have almost doubled:-
Bread, tinnned beans, tomatoes, tuna, and corned beef. Almost everything else you can think of, is up in price, milk, eggs, minced beef, chicken, the list is endless.:(

Possibly but I've not got the time...and they are for my 20 year old son so he can feed himself when I'm at work...

I'm amazed that people think a tin of fish caught in the Indian Ocean & transported all the way here is 'expensive' at 50p?

- maybe try canned Sardines, instead :p:

I think it is possible that the increase in the price of food lately is due to the depreciation in the value of the pound versus the US dollar. In the past six months the pound has lost 25% of its value. As a lot of raw food stuff is priced in US dollars on the international market then we in the UK would see relative increase in the price we pay for food. There is also a possibility that the supermarkets would have agreed prices with suppliers when the price of oil was above $100 per barrel, which would have to be passed on as higher prices.

Of course I could just be making excuses for them and hence if you don't like the prices then, 'Just say no!' as they said on Grange Hill

Yup i've noticed it abit as well, it tends to be whenever something goes on offer the pricing computer then goes mad and puts the price up.

Example tesco's nachos kit, was £1.30-40 for a while, goes on special for £1, soon as special was over it became £1.98 where its since stayed :(

others are more variable, tv 500g mince used to be ~£1 or there abouts, then it jumped to £1.20, then £1.40, 60, 80 until it went past £2. stayed there for a few weeks before dropping to £1.40 odd where its now stayed for a while. Its price dropped mainly because the healthy living mince stuff went either 2x250g for £2, or 1x500g for £2 cant remember which but it was cheaper than value!

Putting prices up like that does allow them to say 'Was xxxx, now yyy' and make it sound like a bargain

Peanut butter has gone up from 95p to £1.68 in Tesco and ASDA, it just goes to show they aren't the cheapest. I hate it when ASDA do the offer of buy 2 for £2 when you work it out if you buy 2 you'll save 1p, they are crafty swines.

So - upgrade your PC - it's an investment - right?

Think I'll get away with that one with the missus!!

It was an investment if you did it 2 weeks ago...

Bought some cheap DDR2-PC6400 ram 1GB and it came out at £16 including VAT for 2 sticks. Looked today and it's now £12 ex-vat for 1 stick :(

Talking about my initial moan about the sunflower seeds, Lidl has 400g packs for only 79pence... now if they can do it for less than 20p per 100g then how the hell is Tesco charging 98p :(

They were selling 500g packs of Cafe Crema (actually really nice and strong) for 50p (Walmart asda in MK)

**always reminds me of my aunt many years ago buying coffee for her first coffee maker, she grabbed a pack and felt it, realising it was rock hard she then found an assistant and told then that the coffee was hard and must be off, the assistant started clearing the shelves of all the hard coffee... My aunt soon walked away when she realised it was vacuum packed ;) **

ASDA Value salted roasted peanuts were 97p per kilo bag... they have vanished and been replaced with rebranded bags at £2.20.
