I remember sometime last year having issues with you tube for about what felt like 9 months solid.

Is it just me thats experiencing the buffering of videos being slower than "actually" watching them?

I can watch 3 secs of a video.. then it will stop and buffer.. then start again.. for 3 secs then buffer

it seems to be like 70% of the video's on Youtube

I have tried multiple browsers (Google Chrome / IE6 / IE7 / FFOX) .. Router is also spot on.. getting full 20MB.. @ 2.23mb/s and pinging spot on..

Ping statistics for 208.117.236.73:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 192ms, Maximum = 213ms, Average = 201ms

Pinging is a tad high.. but should still be ok..

Anyone any ideas.. or is this still the ongoing issue thats been going for 2 years?

The ping time is reasonable to US based servers.

chances are it's an issue with routing to youtube's many servers, I've never had it as seriously naffed as you OP, but i've definately had bad download rates from youtube servers.

i look at stuff on youtube all the time and have never had any problems loading videos regardless of length. They always load faster than i am watching them so i am streaming them faster than real time. I have just checked and my ping averages 160.

A friend of mine had this same thing, and kept blaming VM as browsing was fine but any streaming content kept freezing. After keeping bugging me to look at it I eventually went round - ended up actually being the router when being used over wireless (Belkin) ... Plugged the laptop into the ethernet port and no issue. Got my friend to go back to PC World and swap out the router and now can watch YouTube problem free! .... Highly unlikey to be the same, but its always worth checking too :)

What you are describing is as near as dammit what happens to me on You Tube, like yourself I too am on 20mb which never drops below 18mb and my connection is straight to the PC, no router.
Touch wood its not been to bad recently, but there are times when I give up even trying to watch some clips because of the everlasting buffering...strange thing is though this only seems to happen to me on You Tube and not on any other sites.

Don't get that much of a problem on "You Tube" yes it takes a wee while to start, but then again i am on ADSL. It always plays in full no buffering.

What i do get is a nightmare trying to watch "news clips" on the BBC's News Page. Three seconds of picture then 15-20 seconds to buffer the next 3-5 seconds. I only use firefox and haven't tried it on IE yet. I may try as been suggested, seeing if I can borrow a spare router and see if this is the problem. Only using the VM supplied Netgear one at the moment.

I have that problem on occasions. Sometime the streaming just refuses to come down at any decent rate. Other times it works just fine. I believe I never see more than about 50-75KB/s from Youtube though.

really can't complain about youtube, even though I have similar problems. I mean, we do get see so many cool old vids that we thought we'd never see again ;)

meh .. i get the feeling this router could be quicker... im not too keen on it..

im directly wired to it.. its a WRT54G-S Linksys with DDWRT Firmware on it..

just wondering if its time for to actually pay a bit more for a new router...
may have to when the 50 mb comes out .. im not sure what the linksys routers support at the moment.

YouTube on my 20mb connection is a DISASTER!!!
if i want to watch videos without leaving it to load for ages i must do so at around 03:30am to around 13:00pm.

Its nothing to do with my PC, temp internet files etc, connetions, internet browser etc.
Im not a heavy user or anything like that either.

Very rarely can i get 16mb on various speed tests and times of day/night.

On site like gamespot or downloading apple HD film trailers it will peak at 9meg which is good, not my true connection speed but hay, i dont expect that all the time, and it being a server far away.

The videos seem to load fine on my mates Sky connection (as much as i dislike them i am considering)
either VM dislike YouTube, or they just plain can't deliver.

Since spring this year using YouTube has gotton dreadfully worse!!
its now at the point where i don't bother going on it anymore :(
although the past week or so with all thi 50mb talk, the YouTube video speeds seem to have gone up a few meg, its gone from dial up kbps speeds to 4meg sometimes

i hope this lasts for more than a week though! as most over sites work just fine on my connection.

Is it actualy possible to get like 15meg when loading a youtube video in the UK?

Not possible to go past 2Mb anyway, as YouTube do indeed throttle to 2Mb. I haven't gone past it on my 26Mb connection either :)

I have never had a problem accessing YouTube on my 20MB. Even now with the new widescreen videos and higher quality video it works fine.
