View Full Version : Just upgraded to 10 meg but am only getting 5meg

I have just been upgraded today to 10 meg (from 2). I have reset my modem and connected to the internet.

I've ran some speed test and seem to only be getting around 5mbps. Trying to download files also supports that i'm only getting 5meg as they typically download at a rate of around 500kbps.

I've only been in the house 2 months so have a new modem and not an old one that I have brought with me from another house

Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like it is the modem, it doesn't support 10Mb. What modem is it?

Not sure what modem it is,
Its small, square, black and says ambit 256 on the bottom of it.

You've just told me, it's an Ambit 256. ;) Now, I'm pretty sure that can handle more than 10Mb. I think it's the one I have and I'm on 20Mb.

tbh dude if you ran the test just before you posted your message you probably won't have got your full speed. I ran a test earlier this evening and only got 13mbit out of my 20mbit. Try it again later on after 10 ish or tomorrow morning.

Signal to Noise Ratio - 37 dB
Power Level - -4 dBmV

Upstream -

Are you connected via an ethernet cable or USB, if on USB you will only get around 6/7Mb and need to change to ethernet, you can get one from ASDA for £2.99.

Well it could be the modem especially if its a SB3100 and the SB4100 can struggle due to its age.

If you are getting only 5Mb and your levels are fine when you post them it is mostly likely your area is overloaded, two things you can do is downgrade back to 2Mb or contact support either by the newsgroups or phone support, I would say newsgroups is your best bet as they are normally brilliant and the phone support is only good if you get through to liverpool and sometims Scotland

Simple put no as you only get a free router if you take either 10Mb or 20Mb as a new broadband customer not if you just upgrade

buggar... looks like i'll have to buy one then!
When i get home i'll get the info you all need from my modem and then try to set up newsgroups and contact the support.

Are they usually on of a nighttime?

Yeah I think they are 24/7 or until midnight I am sure someone who works for VM will be able to give the correct times, however if your going to get a router stay away froms VM router get something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134991 as its N Draft router and will give you better wireless speed and coverage around your house

Thanks, I would go with a 'N' routher anyway because my Macbooks have n built in.

You don't need it to access the VM support groups.

You'd only need it if you were connecting from a non VM connection, which as ex-Telewest you're not.

The following link shows you how to set up newsgroups to get support from VM

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers...setting-up.php

If it's Outlook Express, open it go to Tools > Accounts > Add Newsgroup
Be careful of using your proper e-mail address, put an extra space in it to avoid the spam bots.

NNTP Server is news.virginmedia.com

Then look for the virginmedia groups, the one you want is

virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

Post your queries there, where support monitor the groups from 8am - 10pm

Well it should have one and with you being EX-Telewest it should be above 29dbmv, so you should call Tech Support and ask why.

actually db not dbmv ;)

Just out of interest where does the 29 figure come from? Is that figure dependant on modem/TW/NTL connection???

have you tried downloading a file from
http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com for EG BF1942 Demo.

if it maxes above 1.8mb/s ur on ur way :)

dont believe speed tests...

something strange going on there if you havnt got a SNR.. you should have.. its extremely important and required to diagnose faults..

hope this helps.

Interesting thread.

I've been on 10mb for a while now apparently. I've run speed tests at various hours and never got above 4.5.

Actually, i don't think i've seen it go that high for ages now.

I was definitely on 10mb though because i remember posting my stuff on here somewhere, and i've never downgraded.

Silly question Pia, you're not on wireless are you? On some connections the combination of card and router you're not likely to get much about 5Mbs. Tis thus with mine :dunce:.

BenRichards
28-11-2008, 10:41
wouldnt that only be the case on a older B router though? Surely with G and N wireless routers you should still see the full capacity?

Also depends on the USB port and the speed of the PC...

One of my work laptops is USB1.1 so will never really give me more than about 5-6 Mb even though it's a wireless G+ dongle in it

That and if it's a 3100, it only has a 10baseT port on the back so will probably max out at around 7MBit (even if the CAM can handle 10).

you should give them a ring and get them to send you one of the Ambit 256's. I used to have a Terayon TJ210 and never wanted to replace it. I am of the thinking that if it ain't broken, don't fix it. The terayon handled 10mbit no problemo (and i read that it was supposed to be able to go up to 37mbit) but when i was upgraded to 20mbit i didn't get any extra speed at all. In the end I had a look on the Ntl website and filled in a form for a new modem and it worked a treat. 20mbit all the way for me now :)
