View Full Version : How many hours do you work?

I'm often in contact with field engineers, one of the issues we hear alot about is overwork. Whether it's Virgin, C&W or one of the many contractors I'm continually shocked by the ammount of hours some of you guys are putting in. I'd like to get a handle on what the overall picture is like so if you have time please drop a post and let me know how things are for you and how many hours you put in during an average week.

Also interested to hear about how your company gets you to do more hours, things like travel to work rules, bonuses, penalties and jobs per day etc.

Thanks

Neil

I work 50-55 hours a week, but my choice - I only travel 10-30 mins each way every day (depending on which site I am at), and I like to start about 7:30am.

My work-life balance is good - work hard through the week, and evenings/week-ends are free unless major system outages (which are very, very rare).

But then again, I am a manager, and do nothing - I must be carp at it if it takes me 55 hours per week.:D

I think the OP is interested in the number of hours VM and contract staff rather than the average CF poster are putting in...

Hang on - that means you're doing 16 hour days, 7 days a week. Ignoring the fact that that must be illegal, when do you sleep!?

The undead never sleep.......

Much like the average CF poster.

How about the number of hours spent viewing CF? 112 hours per week must be pretty close for some members. :erm:

In which case he'd be better off working through normal Union channels within Virgin Media itself, rather than asking on a forum with a wide membership base ...

Thank God I'm above average then ;)

Well, yes. I didn't say it was a particularly smart way of going about it ;)

Anywhere between 37.5 to 100, depending on work load, site and deadlines. Yes, sometimes it is too much but hey, it's a job.

I'm supposed to be (part time) on 30, but usually do about 37.

VM service techs only do 37.5 or 40hrs p.w. depending on when they signed their contracts, the problem, though, lies within the rota itself, not the hours.
3 mondays out of 4 are 8am-7pm with 16 service calls.the other monday is 11-7 with 12 calls.
2 saturdays out of 3 are worked at 8am-4pm with 12 service calls.now i dont think many moan TOO much (after all its a customer serving industry) but VM bang on about work/life balance, this is why i think techs moan about the rota,it sticks in their throats a little!
last year at christmas was a real kick in the teeth though.they only get christmas day/boxing day/new years day off (again their choice i.e. signing a 365 day a year contract,so if your rota'd they CAN make you work) but when a mail was sent to ALL staff saying 'if you are non-essential have monday off on us',you can imagine how they felt!!
VM, though, were good enough to give them an extra day on their entitlement for the year after!!!!

Contracted for 37.5 hours per week, frequently work closer to 50, currently owed about 50 hours off in lieu because we don't get overtime.

if all they offered was TOIL for extra hours worked i wouldnt do them.
do they pay you 1.5 when youre taking your TOIL,i guess not,yet you did those hours in a 1.5 slot.(or if you did say 1/2 a day extra, would you get a full day off back for it??) im guessing that if you work for VM your a network tech??

Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to, that isn't an option in my area of work.

Nope, don't work for VM. The time I'm owed as TOIL is on a one for one basis - I work an extra hour, I get (eventually) an extra hour off (maybe) :)

30 seems a lot for part time - 37 is full time surely.

Pia

I think 30 is classed as full time, according to tax credits. So yeah i'm full time :dunce:
