What is the 10.xx.xx.xx IP in tracerts? Usually the 2nd hop after your router is you have one. Is it the modem? Because i though that would of been 192.168.100.1?

Hop 1 being 192.168.x.x is your router or modem
Hop 2 being 10.x.x.x is the local UBR (universal broadband router) which your modem connects to.

But surely this is the local UBR? In this case mine.

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: nott-clif-ubr-1-ge01.network.virginmedia.net
Address: 80.4.46.10

Every UBR has a private ip address as well, this is what you are seeing.

The 10 ip is the private ip address for your modem.

It's the UBR, have read here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/ipaddr.html#ubrip

half way down

And that's why I like coming here, learn something new every day.
3 years and this is something I wasn't aware of.

No worries,
Even after reading it over and over I was still not sure if I should post it, because you have been so sure in the past :)

When a customer is having issues with high ping times, I ping the 10 ip addy and if it's high I ask them to remove the ethernet cable from the modem and ping it again. If this brings the ping times down from hundreds to tens then I know it something on the pc causing the issue. This would work at modem level or ubr level, I think.

I think, being the reason I'm currently studying networking so I can know :)
