Hello,
I have a motorola SURFboard SB5100 which is connected to a belkin router, the problem is that i am having too much lagg, i am connected to xbox live through ICS and when i host a match all my friends do is moan that they cant do anything due to the lagg... i wanted to fix this so i looked at the router and that looked fine i looked at the modem at the logs and it had a load of errors... i manged to screen-shot some of the errors:

[Mod Edit: Moved picture to attachment]

SPECS:
I orginal had 2mb line, them apparently was upgraded to 4mb.. but the speed still sucks,

here are some speed results when just my laptop is on(mine and brothers xbox 360's are offline):

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2008/11/13.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

It looks shocking.. what do you think is causing the lag on xbox live?

Cheers,

When did you last reboot the modem by unplugging the power from the back of the modem as you have a 2Mb docsis file in the config pages above 2148-256.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Be careful of reading modem logs, because what happens when you reboot your modem is that every single update for that modem is received at the same time giving you those worrying logs.

My modem is a Motorola SB5100 and if I look in my logs I will find some with the Date stamp of 1970 and we did not have broadband then.

Erm two days ago.. i had the letter about the upgrade maybe before telewest went into VM. so i dunno whats happening..

Here are the signal levels..

Any idea on the errors and if the problems will cause lagg?

Very low upload causing your lag which is done by been capped

What do you mean capped?

Jonathan90
21-11-2008, 21:01
Quote of Virginmedia website "An example of how this works is that if a broadband size M customer downloaded 500MB of data between 4pm and 9pm, their speed would be temporarily managed with their download speed set to 1Mb and their upload speed to 128Kb for a 5 hours."

which is bang on what your getting so your capped

EDIT: i just done the speed test on this forum and here are the results:

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 21:23:53 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 9057 ms = 113.1 KB/sec, approx 932 Kbps, 0.91 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 9456 ms = 108.3 KB/sec, approx 892 Kbps, 0.87 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 8719 ms = 117.4 KB/sec, approx 967 Kbps, 0.94 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 20062 ms = 102.1 KB/sec, approx 841 Kbps, 0.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 908 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps

Oh and another thing is are you sure its not my router or my laptop thats the problem? as i said i conect to xbox live using ICS so.. and my brother connects to the router. so i dunno how happening here

You could always trial 10Mb for a month click HERE (http://www.virginmediapeople.com/12days/) and look at the third option.

If you are gaming and your brother is browsing then you probably will hit Traffic Management.

It's not capping..it's throttling...:D

The answer may be that you will have to play at a different time of day...Not practical for a 15 year old on school nights I know but possibly an answer at weekends and during holidays..

Anyway this teacher reckons you need your kip and to get your homework done first.I see too many teenagers asleep at their desks...;)

As you're only 15 ask your dad to call up and confirm the broadband speed you're on.

Why do you use ICS for the xbox?
Connect the xbox directly to the router.

Is your brother's computer fast enough to handle what he's doing on the comp as well as you connecting to him using ICS?
If you are only on 2Mb, then you are sharing this with your brother.
Does he use any programs for downloading? Bearshare, Limewire, Utorrent etc, does he leave these running when you are connected?

I cant connect direct to the router as the router is in the other room, my brother only uses his xbox 360 so he only uses xbox live.. Any ideas?

and i use ICS because i dont want to waste my money on an overpriced adapter. and brigding wont work for me

Run an ethernet cable from the other room to yours. No need to go wireless.

Wireless adapters are available from many good computer outlets for as little as £15-20. Aldi was doing some a while back for £11, so check there. ;)

Does the game lag when you connect to someone else’s server or does it just happen when you're hosting the game.

If you lag when you connect to a games server, then there's a problem with your connection somewhere, be it router or VM services.

If the game just lags when hosting, it's down to lack of upstream bandwidth. Which on the `M’ package connection is 256kbits/s and 128kbits/s when STM'd. I can’t image Xbox 360 games use anymore bandwidth than a PC game, which should be somewhere around 15kBytes/s. Basically boils down to the fact that with a upstream connections speed of 256kbits/s (32kbytes/s) will only probably allow 2 players to connect and only 1 if you’re STM’d, when you’re hosting. These are best conditions and do not take into account that someone else in the house could be using some of the bandwidth up as well.

Elitestatus i will try and explain this for you simply

between the hours of 4 and 9pm if you use to much bandwidth in your case 500mb once you hit that you are temporarily throttled down for 5 hours to the speed that u had yesterday 1mb down 128 k up after the 5 hours it will return to normal so if u hit the limit at lets say 19:15 it wouldn't return to normal until 12:15. No offence other people but you are confusing him with the router jargon leave everything as it is,it was only lagging cause 128k up if not enough to play with a descent amount of players and plus if your brother is on it aswell that makes it worse. imo theres nothing wrong with your setup just that upload speed. ask your brother if he is downloading anything and have you got security on your router.

and try reading that all in 1 go lol.

LOL, cheerfs for that i understand now, with lets say a 10mb package will the capping be less? and my brother hasnt got any demos or anything like that downloaded, i think all this has lead to me that ether me built in wifi card in my laptop is rubbish or the router is rubbish.. may go down the homeplug's.

Ok do you think its worth buying homeplugs aswell to reduce the lag and make a solid connection

Jonathan90
23-11-2008, 03:18
Homeplugs are worse ignore people who say the router is the problem. cause from what i can see that is solid 2mb connection and i take it that as through wireless. ping is good aswell. btw homeplugs can give more lag if your electricity fluctuates. stick with the router it will be fine 2mb honestly is barley enough for 1 person and you can forget about hosting games on it never mind 2 people trying.

Hmm.. i have hosted a private match on cod4 a couple of time i had about 5 people on then we was flying across the map and then i have a connection interupted, and when i was having 10mb i was still lagging a tiny bit..

but the thing is as i said before i cant upgrade as my dad is out of cash and my mom is ill..
