I've pacifically signed up to these boards to let people know that 10mb through a STB is possible.I've always read that the most you could get through a STB was 4mb . Today I received an email from VM telling me that they have now finished upgrading everybody to 10mb so I did a speedtest and to my suprise I have 9.something MB .

Just thought I'd let people know.

I thought 10 was the limit anyway? I get around 1.2mb on my modem.

wasnt the 4 the "limit" imposed by VM as the STBs generally couldn't reach 10mb so they didn't allow 10mb on them and so the next highest was 4mb

bottom line, we do not support 10 meg on a STB & you need to get a cable modem sent out or installed.

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.
Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/
click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.
Remember to stop and delete the files.

i.e : 250kBps X 8 = 2MB, 500kBps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kBps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kBps X 8 = 20MB

You would be better calling up Customer Services and asking for an upgrade to a Stand Alone Cable Modem as with your present Samsung box you can only receive 6Mb but with a SACM you can upgrade if you wanted to 20Mb, plus you would get a better connection.

The should be quite happy to upgrade you as the company would prefer all customers to swap to SACM.

Call Customer Care not Faults because they would have to transfer you as they cannot change your account.

It is amazing how many people want to correct those figures, and when I change them someone else decides their wrong:D do not worry about it as it all comes out right in the end.:D

You can be sure they are right now. I have been dealing with them long enough to know which is right and which is wrong except when people who speak to you in the incorrect units and you end up get confused...

Abyss, are you taking the x8 wrong? you're saying 250kilobits x 8 is 2megabit, which is correct, however the point of the x8 is to convert bytes to bits to make sense of realising their windows install measures in bytes and their connection is measured in bits

i.e : 256KB/s * 8 = 2048Kbps ... 2048Kbps / 1024 = 2Mbps
i.e : 512KB/s * 8 = 4096Kbps ... 4096Kbps / 1024 = 4Mbps
i.e : 1024KB/s * 8 = 8192Kbps ... 8192Kbps / 1024 = 8Mbps
i.e : 2560KB/s * 8 = 20480Kbps ... 20480Kbps / 1024 = 20Mbps
To keep them round... Its tedious this you know!!! Why on earth I got confused is beyond me... Oh wait, I'd just got up!

I just thought, IE will display in MB/s when it gets to that range... Gah! Forget it you can work that out. *Hint: divide KB/s by 1024 then multiply by 8 ;)*

I think that it should actaully read:

i.e :
250KBps = 'M', 2Mb
1250KBps = 'L', 10Mb
2500KBps = 'XL', 20Mb

It's generally I think the large amounts of information per line that is throwing people off.

Any chance you could post your speedtest results from your Set Top Box Broadband? I have never seen a STB that will pull 10Mb/s, the Samsung would pull between 4 and 6 and that was as good as it got.

I really wish broadband providers had stuck with the much less confusing Kbit and Mbit abbreviation rather than relying on case. It would have made life so much easier.

Hi all,

I have a silver samsung box and expected to have to go through all the hassle of upgrading to new modem.

I received an email on the 21/11/08 from Virgin exclaiming that the upgrade had been completed for everyone. For some reason I am always a little bit sceptical re Virgin and their statements and just ignored the mail.

A few days later I noticed that an update file downloaded faster than expected. Anyhow I checked the speed and to my surprise my 4Mb had increased to 10Mb....snap shot below...HAPPY DAYS:)

Samsung up to 6Mb

Highly unlikely to get 10Mb on either machine and if they do they will eventually fail, best to get a free modem upgrade from Customer Services on 150
