Hi there.

I had VM Broadband installed today and they left me the router.

But I don't really know how to set this up? I don't see a connection for the cable lead that is currently in the modem?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Although now I see you still need to use the cable modem, which is fine.

I want my PC and PS3 and sisters laptop all connected with an ethernet cable. Can I do this instead of using wireless?

Yes, As you have established the router is not a modem. You have to place the router between the PC and the cable modem.

The router will be able to connect 4 devices with cables. You don't need to use the wireless capability at all.

The cable modem connects to the WAN port on the router and the PCs and other devices to the LAN ports.

You need to make the router use the MAC address as the Cable Modem - you should be able to login to the router's interface and do this.

Once you have done this, just plug them all in to the router via the ethernet and the devices should do the rest.

Is it safe to play online games in peak times?

I don't really download but play online games quite a bit so don't want to risk being throttled!

Shouldn't be an issue. Gaming really doesn't use that much bandwidth. I've played cod4 all night without it kicking in.

As the upload speed is still good, you have not been STMed. Your poor download performance has some other cause.

As Ernie_C says, if it was STM throttling it would have hit your upload speed as well.
If this continues to be an issue you'll need to investigate your setup further. If you have the router installed you should try without it and see if the problem goes away.

It could be a router setup issue or any of several other factors causing the slowdown.
Have to see if it continues.
