I just thought for a few seconds - how about everyones post here which area you live and what speed are you getting from your current speed package eg: 2Mb, 10Mb, 20Mb or even 50Mb. So, everyones will know what speed is likely to be in your area. Please use this speed site: http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ for this post only - Ok, I start off with myself:

Seems like using different browser give different result.

I will post another in the evening which will be slow!!!!

Thought I would try different browsers to see if I got any difference.

Have tried Firefox 3.0.4 and get

http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/02154977.png (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk)

IE8

http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/02154876.png (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk)

And finally Opera 9.62

http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/02154952.png (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk)

From NG18 with a solid connection there is no real difference between browsers.

I will try all 3 again around 7pm tonight when it could show up more of a difference.

The "oversubscribed" UBR are real pain, however, look on the upside, even when slow you get a better speed than vast majority of any ADSL which will probably give 6.5 - 7 Mb at best. 700 + on upload is not possible!

Co ax length from the local UBR cabinet is similar to the "local loop" line from an exchange, though usually very much shorter.

I'd post my speed test results but having downloaded at full pelt for the last 6 days resulting in over 340gb of data being downloaded I don't think VM will give me a happy result! I have however maxed out the connection the whole time, and maxed out 2.5Mbps during STM as well so I would safely say that...

Area: TS6 0
Speed: No problem on 10Mbps 24/7, no slow downs at any hour, except STM.

:D

Note: Max speed on the graph is 8Mbps because of single ftp thread but I can happily max to 10Mbps if needed, just the sync software I'm using only supports 1 thread!

I use a Mac. Macs are built for nobler purposes than playing games. :p:

I'm not 50 miles away from London though. The routing on Virgin's ADSL means I appear to be all over the place. It's a laugh when you get on a site which tries to serve you localised adverts - there's one particularly persistent 'dating' site that tells me I can get laid tonight in Reading, Nottingham and occasionally Leeds. None of which are anywhere near where I live. Just as well I'm happily married and not looking to go swinging. :D

Are you saying it is not possible to hit just an upload or download STM ? and it must be both, because last night i was running speed tests which indicated a near perfect download speed for my wireless 20 meg connection but upload was dropped half way through the tests fromm 700+ to 500+, i ran half a dozen tests from diff sites and all sites that tested my speeds for more than an nano second showed my upload ONLY being reduced,

Kymmy
04-12-2008, 11:58
I believe that if you get STM'd (by hitting EITHER the upload or download limits) then it effects/reduces both upload and download speed by 75%..but I'm sure someone will confirm this either way..

As for oversubscribed UBR's try the VM tech newsgroups or tech support lines as most peope who have found out about oversubscribing have found out via the tech support services

Then why are you paying for 10mb package. The ombudsman recently approved plans that will mean customers can be charged for what they recieve in terms of bandwidth, not what they signed up for. So if you signed up to 10mb but only get 5mb or 4mb then that ISP has a duty to either get your speeds somewhere near the advertised speed or failing that, to reduce the charge of the service proportionally

Comes into force on 5th of December- see BBC or OFCOM website.
Suspect you will need to go through the whole "as long as you have made/provided the following: 10 phonecalls to india, 5 failed visits from a technician called Mike or Dave, 3 cm of forelock hair from your firstborn and a pint of blood taken on a full moon when Mars is ascendant" thing, but assuming you can be bothered to do so, it may save you a couple of quid a month...

1mb on a 10mb service, no it's not. If my 20mb service drops to 15mb (I give them a chance in peak time) then I phone them up. 151 it's free and moan as much as you can. I did this and they sent an engineer out even though they said there was nothing wrong however moaning does pay off, turns out my cable erm cable was broken. If the indian call centre says you may have spyware or if you are using a router is the problem tell them to jog on, thats the questions I get from them.

just phoned 151, I spoke to an Asian gentleman who said there is maintenance going on today and tomorrow in my area.

It should be ok by wednesday, if not, then phone back

Just as an update to this, after having speeds of 500 kb/s from 5pm to 10pm, I tried a speed test after midnight and I got 5,750kb/s.

Could it be that Virgin bent the truth to me about maintaining servers and I have been traffic shaped for no reason?

Why would they be updating servers at the most busy period?

I'm not happy about this, do you think I will have a case for money off my bill, even though I am on the 10MB Xmas offer?

your speed would be 2.5mbit if you had been traffic shaped. it's much less than that at peak times. This means that it is more likely that they have oversold the connections in your area, without doing the required upgrades.

maybe these upgrades are happening now, if you are lucky, maybe it was just the call centre guy wanting you off the phone.

if it's no better tomorrow, you need to complain to virgin again, see if you can get a date for the upgrade & see if you can get compensation for their poor service. if you don't have any joy with them, i suggest switching isps, then making a complaint to ofcom.

That is what I'll be doing after Christmas, if there aren't any improvements.

Same here, have been on 200Kb since the upgrade. My UBR was supposed to be upgraded yesterday, didn't happen. There is no new date for the UBR upgrade.

I'm getting the impression that they can't support the number of customers they have as when I rang for a discount again this month I quietely told I might be better going with a "more reliable" ISP! Lots of complaints about poor speeds apparently.

Time to start the torture that is the complaints proceedure, ADR.. then Ofcom.

I'm sure I read somewhere that some people might need a modem upgrade (mine's one from about 2001), but now I can't find anything about it on Virgin Media's website?

10mbit in Edinburgh. I use a sidebar and I can always see at a glance what my speeds are and they are almost always (when leeching or upping heavy duty)

1.26MB/s download.
62.6KB/s upload.

These are as expected.

Where I live does not need STM, it's there purely to save costs as I can get these speeds even at peak times until I hit the throttle.

I am ashamed of the service we cable customers get in the UK compared to my friends in Holland and Japan.

Cable are just marginally better than BT...for now. Product is slightly better, the lies, rip-off charging and deception are the same. Roll on FTTH. :dunce:

Wouldn't it be better if all the speed tests were carried out at peak times, say between 4 & 9pm. Then you'll get a better idea if an area is good or bad.

I asked today when peak times where they told me it depends on the area
and how heavy the area is being use and they still can not give me a date
for when the high tdx load is going to be fixed they tell me that the network team have no date for work to start on the fix for ? as it deepends on how many customers are affected

To be honest now the problem with erratic latency has been cleared up, I don't go out of my way to check download speed that offen. As whenever I contacted VM they seam to sit up and notice issues with low download speed. Whereas if I mentioned erratic latency I got no answers back of any worth. But as they where both connected two each other (high tx loads), I tested download speed whenever there was a problem with on-line gaming, which was most of the time before Septmber 08.

But when I have checked lately, download speeds I get:-
Weekdays / nights most of the time it's 2.4 MB/s to 1.8MB/s or there abouts.
Weekends sometimes drops off to around 1.2 MB/s or so, but never stays that low for long.

Maybe the test is in your cache, delete the temp internet files and clear the history and test again the upload is fine.

Your download is good, but your upload should be around 500kb/s on 10Meg and not 248kb/s. Which is odd as VM are normally good with upload speeds. I would run the test again a few more times and see if you still get the same results + try other speed test sites as well (www.speedtest.net or www.speed.io/index_en.html).

If you do get the same results, either get in touch with VM tech support or start a new thread off detailing your problem with upload speed and post some results along with your cable modem power levels (don't post any cable modem of your IP, MAC or Serial #. just power levels and it should look something like this post http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34709921-post1.html). I'm sure some techie person would advise you something wrong with the modem

I did mention to start a new thread to save trashing this one even move than it already is :). Anyhoo,

Upstream transmit Power Level : 56.3 dBmV

From my limited knowledge on modem power levels, your upstream level looks too high. May be someone in the know could confirm whether i'm right or wrong on the matter.

I am a 2meg customer living in North Essex.
At 09.43 on 9 Jan 2009, I am getting the following speeds:
Download 1695 kbps
Upload 178 kbps
That is 15 percent under download max, and 30 percent below upload max.

That would be a good speed on my 20mbit connection. Mine is often around 100kbits. I think Virgin run my local area of a dial up modem.
