View Full Version : Virgin Media 20mb Lag Issues

Hey :)

I'm on Virgin Media 20mb cable, and during peak times it is quite frankly awful. I get constant ping spikes between 30-100 and lots of loss on UK servers and sometimes i just get constant 120 ping all night, and poor download speeds.

I'm not downloading that much so I know im not being capped.

I have the latest cable modem that VM are giving out, and my post code is
NE2 xxx

Anyone any ideas? Is it just VM being over-subscribed in my area? :(

Hi and welcome to the forum, i too suffer a similar problem, which is always worse at night, i recently found out that there was an over-subscription issue on my UBR, which i,m hoping is now in the process of being rectified. if you suspect this then get in touch with VM tech support, and ask them to check your UBR for any capacity issues, i found out mine was running at 140% one evening, ring during the day is my recommendation as you are likely to be put through to india in the evening

First of all, definitely sounds like oversubscription. You're described exactly the same as what I had for 9 months.

As pabscars said, get in touch with VM and get them to check your connection / UBR at peak time. You could do this through newsgroup support, if you don't want to go through restart PC, reboot modem...bla bla bla bla....must be your PC sir, hang up, throw phone at wall and swear a lot.

If the fault is caused by oversubscription, get a `subject to change' fix date from the tech staff and then ring customer services up and tell them you're not a happy bunny that they have let the service get this way. As for what monthly refund and or compensation you get, will probably depend on when you first reported the problem to when it's going to be rectified.

If the dates not exceptable or the refund / compensation is not to your liking then move to ADSL. If you do decide to move to ADSL then do your homework, as I've googled `NE2' and by the looks of things you must live by the Uni, Student city :).

I have got the same problem as i had a while ago when we contact each
if you remember i am just up the road from you, but I am on UBR 01 Bromsgrove, over last week i am luck to get 10Mb i have had varoius
speeds from 1Mb to 10Mb at all times of the day they have told
to avoid the peak hour of 4 till 9 pm and i should get a lot nearer to my
20Mb service They said something about the UBR and they have got to pass it on to another department, and could not give me a date for
the fix.though that was through the support news group . Have rang a couple of times and keep going all through the usual
test, and they alway seam to say they can not see anything wrong with
my conection, last time i rang that said to ring back in 24 to 48 hours.
Nobody there seams to get my point that i am using it out of the peak hours.

Think yourself lucky I've unplugged mine 0k to 12k download speed and that's on 20 meg. Pointless having it plugged in.
Customer services are going to get a good telling tomorrow.

ufitm,

Apart from a few problems about 10 days ago mines been fine since the start of September. I don't know if the planned capacity upgrades took place or not, but there was a few outages at the end of August. I've noticed my card number on the UBR has changed, along with a couple of IP address changes as well.

Laters,

i,m absolutely brassed off at the moment, i rang tech support a couple of days ago they said everything seems ok on my line, and that ubr isnt over capacity, obviously complete rubbish, when i rang a week previous they said it was 140% = well over, so i was hoping tonight things would be different.

ive tried to download from blueyonder games and got 500 x 8 = 4 meg and it was dropping all the time, ive not been stm'd ive checked, it started off nearer 20 meg as it should and dropped to 4 meg within 10 seconds, if that isnt an over subscribed ubr then i dont know what is, unless something else is a miss, who knows.

to be honest i feel i wont get to the bottom of it

i,m getting the new call of duty 5 game tomorrow, and if it too behaves the same way as cod 4 has tonight then I will be forced to say thanks VM but not anymore, which is a bloody shame because potentielly vm has the ability to be an awesome isp,

when you ping www.bbc.co.uk miss the www. off at the start, so it looks like this:-
"ping bbc.co.uk"

then try it. Also applies to tracert test as well.

Don't go to Sky, they have to worst latency ever! The lowest i ever got on speedtest.net was 100ms avg was 200-300ms

I play alot of online games (360 & PS3) and always lag issues and (red dot)

Moved to VM 20MB speedtest.net ping max=70ms avg=40ms

i have a low ping but rubbish speeds i only get full 20mbps about 90% of the time. on any port 80,8080,119,443 tried them all
