Virgin just emailed me to say 50 meg is to be introduced to Huddersfield in the next 2 weeks, first 200 replies to get a new modem and 2 months free trial. An option then to switch to XXL package, no mention of how much extra cost will be.

Yes, definitely genuine.

I'm on holiday in Mexico at the moment. I clicked on 'accept trial' and got confirmation back from virgin.

Hi smooth-criminal, This is the Text

Hello NEIL

If you haven’t heard already, XXL broadband is on its way… it’s ultra fast, has download speeds of up to 50Mb, and we’d like you to be among the first to try it out for us, at no extra cost!

Why have we picked Huddersfield?
When we started looking into where in the UK we could test out our brand new up to 50Mb broadband service we noticed that lots of customers in the Huddersfield area already had our L or XL broadband, so thought you’d be the perfect people to talk to about our new, even faster service. We’re really excited about the launch of XXL broadband, and before we offer it to all of our customers we’d love to know what you think of it.

How to get involved
We’re offering you a sneak preview of our XXL broadband, which starts in a few weeks, and we’re looking for 200 homes to try it out. Plus, experiencing the fastest broadband in the business won’t cost you a penny extra – we’ll charge you no more for our ultra fast XXL broadband than we currently do for your existing broadband service.

Interested? We’ve already got your details, so just click below to sign up. We’ll also send you a shiny new modem in a few weeks time that’s built to handle our new super-speedy XXL service absolutely free. And, once it’s over, you can keep the modem for free and use it with your new XXL service, or your existing one.
Just one click to sign-up

Hurry - sign up closes at midnight on Tuesday 18th November 2008

What happens next
If you’d like to join in, and think that you’ll be able to take some time to tell us what you think of the service then we’d like to hear from you. Being part of this sneak preview is your chance to influence the services we provide and really have your say, so for the first few weeks, we’ll be asking you to answer some short online questionnaires for us.

The Virgin Media team

P.S. And don’t worry, there’s no catch…
Just so you know, taking part doesn’t affect your existing contract with us at all. If you like the higher speed, after the two months are over, we’ll let you know how much it would cost to keep the new service. If you choose not to take it, you’ll simply go back to your previous service and keep paying the same amount as you do already.

Sounds to me like this 50Mb is all just area by area 2 month trials. I thought it was being rolled out nationally before the end of 2008. at this rate they'll be playing catch up with some other ISP by the time it becomes a reality.

So Dudley is on Knowsley (ex-telewest), which network is Huddersfield on? I'm pretty sure its Langley (ex-ntl)

I predict next to come is an ex-ntl Bromley area ;)

Or vice versa if I've got the wrong network lol

What kind of stupid comment is that?? I cant belive the mentality of some!
Of course we would all love that but why on earth would they do such a thing, its the same as saying Sky are adding an HD service but they should do it for free. What about when T-Mobile offer Web N Walk, should it be free? or when i upgraded from Flext 30 to Flext 50, should that have been free as well?
All companys usually offer some kind of free upgrades at some point, more allowance each month, a few extra channels, increase in speed... e.t.c. But no company launches a premium service and upgrades everyone for free.

So let me get this right.

Virgin Media spend all that money upgrading the network for 50 meg.

Virgin Media spend lots of money testing modems and buying them in

Virgin Media spend lots of money training engineers about the new network.

Then you expect them to give it all away for free.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

It was from the information i had been given right from the start not going to be a upgrade but a complete new package.

General Maximus
14-11-2008, 16:37
I sort of half agree, over the years I have always had the top BB package and have gone from 512k, 1mbit, 1.5mbit, 3mbit, 10, and now 20. I have been used to having my connection upgraded automatically rather than having to adopt a new package. If they were only increasingly upload speed or maybe doing 30mbit i would expect an upgrade, but 50mbit is more than twice the speed so i have no problems with them creating a new tier for it and charging more.

That being said, those of us in the 20mbit tier only account for 10% of customers and most of us have got this speed because we feel we need it and are probably all going to want 50mbit as soon as it becomes available, so wont the XL 20mbit tier become rundant and the 50mbit just become the new XL? They can keep the 20mbit but I think everyone will be split into two groups. The plebs who are happy on 2mbit and those of us who always want/need more speed and will migrate to whatever is the fastest. Whatever is left in the middle (20mbit) nobody wants. If you need that much speed that you want 20mbit, you'll cough up the little bit extra to more than double your speed to 50mbit.

BenMcr
14-11-2008, 17:04
I'm sure at some point when 50Mb has become 100Mb, then 20Mb will become 50Mb (and 10Mb will become 20Mb etc)

So all those that don't want to pay for the new top tier can wait lol

General Maximus
14-11-2008, 17:12
good point, I cant wait for that day. I can remember a years when I heard universities were using 100mbit connections, i thought it was a ridiculous amount of speed and that I would never in a million years have a connection like that all to myself.

THe is no way you would get 50MB as a free upgrade as it will be Virgins cash cow, you want it that much then you pay the going rate.

I just heard that VM trial 50Meg for 2 months starting December 2008 until February 2009 then roll out city by city from March 2009 until December 2009 then March 2010 a trial of 100Meg in three areas before roll out by 2nd quarter 2011. So 20Meg won't be upgrade to 50Meg until 2011 - the same time when BT upgrade ADSL2+ up to 24Meg by late 2011/12. So all VM will be connection at 20Meg, 50Meg & 100Meg.

My work has fibre connections with Cable & Wireless, they have a Gbit connection from London over 150 miles away.

I would want to guess how much £££££ they pay each year for this.

Japan & Korea have an avg speed of 85-100mbps. I cant wait for H2O to start rolling out nationwide!

We could all have Gbit connections in 5yrs!

telfordcable

No, it won't be H20 nationwide roll out, it only for those who build new homes ! (not for all of us 100%)

General Maximus
14-11-2008, 20:03
that is a damn shame, i hate it when they announce things early. The VM page gives you the impression that it would all be done and dusted by now and in reality most of us probably won't see 50mbit till this time next year. I hate being teased for 2 years. I would rather them just send me an email one day and let me know it is available NOW if i wanted it and that is it without all the build up and hype and having to wait.

H2O is nothing to do with 'new builds' they use the sewers to rollout fibre and any isp's interested make deals to supply services through them.

Every area that is interested will get it, eventually.

It's upto 100Mbit symetrical.

I doubt many ISP's will actually offer that.

VM are interested in H2O....so that'll go to hell.

Maybe they do yes but, i was speaking to someone the other day on the phone who is on the 50meg trail in the Dudley area and they could only manage to get about 15meg download speed from the blueyonder gamefiles site with 4 downloads at once.

There was no router connected and the network card was all set for 100mbps full duplex also, so not really that gooder start :erm:

Lets just hope thats teething problems hey because if i paid for 50 meg and got those speeds i really wouldn't be a happy bunny :dozey:

General Maximus
14-11-2008, 21:07
that is the problem, i know everyone is moving onto docsis 3 and stuff but people atm are paying for 20mbit and only getting 10, if they move over to 50mbit and still only get 10 or 15, something is very wrong. The reason why i have stayed with VM/Ntl all these years is because I have personally never had a problem getting whatever my max speed is supposed to be, like now I always pull 2.2mb/sec for my 20mbit connection. I can't wait to see what I get on 50mbit. I just feel sorry for those who have constant problems and maybe they do need to seek an alternative provider when a viable one becomes available.

If i remember correctly the 10Mb went from £35 to £37(for most) as it morphed into 20Mb.Not much of course but still not free.

As far as the 50Mb goes though i could`nt give two hoots about it myself.
