Hi,

I heard 2Mbit is being upgraded to 4Mbit free, is this true? :D

If it does, it will probably be after the 50MB roll out but do not hold your breath as it may be kept as an entry level service.

Very true NOT, Virgin Media have said they wont at the moment anyways due to 50Mb and the recent upgrade from 4Mb to 10Mb, best thing to do is upgrade to 10Mb only a extra £7 and you should see the increase *subject to if your UBR had the upgrade*

I really think Virginmedia need to up the 2mb customers to 4mb.
They will be lagging behind when compared to other ISP's entry level broadband speeds soon.

Gives you a reason to upgrade to 10MBit for another £7 though surely

I already think £18 for 2mb is expensive so am not going to pay any more.
I'd happily pay £10 for 2mb if possible.

Change ISP then? VM have a monopoly on their network and they can charge what they like

Someone needs to call VM :), you can 2Mb + phone for £ 15.50 / month for 1 year. Then when the years up, ring again and sort out a new deal.

or if you don't want the phone, then ring anyway because I think the price should be £ 17 / month for 2Mb after any deal has finished

On the above link it's £10 a month for the first 6 months, then just £17 a month after that

I fact all of the prices for each BB package are different to what I understand to be to normal monthly price after initial offer of 6 months is over:

2mb is £ 17 per month (I thought it should be £ 18) http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=227

10mb is £ 24 per month (I thought it should be £ 25) http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=3264

20mb is £ 36 per month (I thought it should be £ 37) http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=3246

The main thing is VM can pretty much promise to 2Mb due to the way the network works and ADSL can only provide a upto speed, I know VM advertise upto but they are more than likely to give you the speed you get (I understand you wont get this if your area is overloaded) but not many ISP's can give you 20Mb

Darth speaks the truth, 2Mbit customers being unable to reach 2Mbit is very rare and very unusual indeed.

That said 90+?% of DSL bods get 2Mbit+

This practice of stinging long-standing customers with much, much higher charges unless they get lucky when they call to question them is one of those things that really stinks, in my view.

A lot of companies in other spheres seem to take the view that retaining customers is as important as attracting new one. As someone who had been with ntl/VM for 6 or 7 years, was paying £29 per month for 2Mb BB plus a 'phone line, and for whom VM would not budge from the £29 per month price when I queried it a couple of years ago I feel the whole pricing structure is pretty unfair.

Maybe it's our natural reluctance to switch ISPs, plus the monopoly that VM has on the cable network, that allows some companies to behave as they do.

Thankfully, the ISP I've just switched to has a really clear pricing policy and provides me with around 6.5Mb BB and 'phone line for less than I was paying VM.

Virgin have actually tried to improve things for existing customers when they phone up and get them onto the current pricing.

However, to do so so may mean taking out an additional service or upgrading a service.

So Virgin would be quite happy for anyone who is paying £29 for Phone and Broadband to go onto either the £31 package which includes TV, or you could possibly go onto the £27 'TV M, BB L and Phone M'. So TV and faster broadband for less money (but keeps you as a profitable customer to Virgin)

Look at page 24 in the presentation for Investors. It shows you the percentage of Virgin customers on 'Backbook' i.e Legacy ntl/telewest pricing
http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_files/irol/13/135485/reports/Analyst_day_november112008.pdf

It has dropped from around 90% of customers in Feb 2007 to around 30% now

Just had a look through the presentation for investors. I'm sure I wasn't supposed to see that but what the heck. Interesting to read that the network has the theoretical 200Mb capacity. And they want to increase their HD offering. I think I'll keep my contract with Virginmedia not that I was planning to leave any time soon.

Considering that the 20Mb is £20 when with a phone I think the 50Mb will be a bit more than that. And I can't see Virgin doing any retention deals on it anyway as it is hardly like you can go anywhere else for 50Mb

I didn't have any virgin phone. No phone.

I only got 20Mb cable broadband only. No phone in my house. Only mobile phone.

In that case you have no chance lol.

ALL of Virgin's best deals now require you to have a fixed phoneline from them
