Just off the horn with VM tech support he told me to power down the modem for one hour, whilst on the phoned the rep told me to download a movie and see the transfer rate. Little did he know I was downloading a 1GB file from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/.

I usually say power of the modem for about 10 seconds when I want the modem rebooted so i assume you spoke to our offshore colleagues.

Here is how to use the gamefiles site.

-------------------------------------------------------------

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Remember to stop and delete the files.

i.e : 250kBps X 8 = 2MB, 500kBps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kBps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kBps X 8 = 20MB

Yeah to be hones I have a server that is in the UK at the speeds from that are terribe also the speeds from the http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ are also slow topping out at 350k sec used Flashget to increase the speed went upto 401k sec.

---------- Post added at 22:56 ---------- Previous post was at 22:51 ----------

Oh, just downloaded a file of a Gige news with 100 connections up downloaded at full 20mbit so it seems like it is localised by the looks of things then again if we could all open 100 connections to servers our connection speed would be great.

Right, last couple days connection has been very poor indeed. I am in Belfast too. I am supposed to be on 10meg cable, and i have tv and phone in there too. I started noticing the problems when I started to get alot more lag than usual in some computer games I play online. Then tonight it was horrendously bad. So I ran some traceroutes to two hosts, one in Sweden and one in German, who both I always get excellent quality with zero lag, and now they both bring up poor results.

I have checked the settings on the modem, and all settings seem to be within normal paramaters. I have ran SpeedTest and all sorts of speedtests, and the results are up and down like a yo-yo. Sometimes only getting 1.5mb, sometimes 4mb, sometimes 2mb, and even getting pings of 140 to london on speedtest! (I ran these traceroutes around 10:30pm)

Ideas? Any other IPs I can run a traceroute to vrigin media?

Cheers

I don't understand any of the above - what are you talking about! I have been looking at the Virgin site trying to work out why my internet connection is suddenly sooo slow and stumbled on this site. I thought the slow connection had something to do with switching yesterday from norton to avg but maybe not!

Well, just off the phone again to VM. I can download full pelt up until 5pm after 5pm to 1am my connection slows right down when trying to download any file. For example my server is in france and it is on a 100mbit line www.ciaranmarley.com/test/ (http://www.ciaranmarley.com/test/) the download speed is 200k sec. Going to http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test the speed is still slow my brother who hardly ever downloads has the same issue.

not sure on all the tech stuff:-) but im located in newtownabbey and have been on with tech support, have noticed slowdowns over past few weeks, then from monday it has not improved .
im a gamer so im baseing my speed on the pings i recieve from my usall servers which would normally be around 25 now its 90-110 lag lag wow.
iv been sent a new modim but no differance there, few lads from belfast online in servers getting same problem, which makes me think its a service problem
any advice would be welcome.

To be honest Storm I think they are over subscribed, my brother is in the same property as myself and his connection on 10Mbit is very slow. From 2pm to 12am he is throttled for no reason he doesnt download much he just uses it for playing Counter Strike and a few other online games, usually ping time to these servers are 25-30 now then are 70-100. He spoke to VM and they said that there is no issues within the network.

That is complete utter rubbish. One of their nodes has to have problems at peak times. I rarely use my connection now, workin mon-fri 9-5, pay for a 10meg connection, come home to use it, and its utter crap, with horrible pings.

Once again, the connection is utter crap tonight. For online gaming, it is completely useless.

Simple fact is lads, your UBR is over subscribed. I called support a few times and no one told me the truth, one time I got through to a UK support rep that was decent and he told me the truth. My local UBR was maxing out at 120% sometimes and this meant I would be lucky to stream a youtube video.

All today and everyday from the 20mb upgrades went live in Liverpool at the times of 3pm to 12am my 20mb is worthless, downloading at less than 1mb and not able to stream most small compressed things and now as I sit here at 12:25 I’m able to download at 1.9 – 2.1 mb without a problem. The network is packed, the pings are bad and they are over selling their product. Get on the damn phones and demand a better service.

I won’t be letting up until I can download at 1.9 – 2.1 at anytime I wish, for this is what I’m paying for.

Now that is strange because I am on uBR21Live in L10 so they have been busy changing names.

If you are in South Liverpool then I am not surprised if you are waiting for an upgrade.

I voted with my wallet.

I've become so disappointed with Virgin Media and their Mumbai muppets over the last year or so. On the L package I should be getting 10Mb, but performance tests consistently only show around 1.6Mb.

So this week I told them to put me back to the basic 2Mb service as that's all that I think they can competently deliver. I did give then the option of sending an engineer to demonstrate their service running at 10Mb, but they declined and were happier to downgrade me.

Have I noticed any difference? No.

Like all Telcos VM are over selling what they can deliver. It's a shame users don't club together in a class action against these companies for not delivering what they sell. Ferrari would soon be in court if they sold a sports car they claimed would do 200mph that turned out to have trouble getting to 40mph! That's what VM (and the others) are getting away with though.

Nuff said, I'm off to enjoy my 2Mb - 'cos it's just as fast as the 10, or 20Mb packages I reckon!

Hi all , 1st post here but a long time reader of the forum :)

Anyway, I live in Newtownabbey and im having the same problem with my speeds , just like Ciaran etc. Im on a 20mb package (£37 a month!)and i only switch the pc on after 7.30pm , so i dont download anything which would enable me to get throttled. I only play online games like COD4 and Battlefield 2. Over the last few weeks my ping has went up from 20-30 on servers to 90-140. Total lagsville.

Not sure what info you guys need but heres what it says in my modem config etc , any help would be great! Im on Vista 64 Ult and its spyware/virus free.

That looks quite normal for an NTL connection, all power levels within normal operational parameters.

Any issue must lie elsewhere.

You will probably be best to call Tech Support and ask if the are any issues on your uBR and is the a date for an upgrade listed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 option 3 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Just to update this quote, switched on my internet tonight and checked my broadband speed. At night time I usually only get 300kps but today (which was the date given to me by tech support on the uBR upgrade for L7) I have been getting 2mb download speed around 9pm, I still subscribe to the 10mb but it does look as if our uBR was upgraded.

I am now able to stream bbc and youtube woo hoo.

Sounds stupid guys but it has been a real pain in the backside ever since we installed Verginmedia.

Mine is running faster. I'm from the L7 area and have a 10mb connection. Looks like they've fixed the problem.

Manchester fallowfield here and the speed is the worst it has been for a long time. Its well known that it is over subscribed here - but the last couple of nights I have been getting 200k off the newsgroups. Completely unacceptable. I stuck with them because they reduced my price and convinced me they were upgrading the UBR's. That was before the summer and since then it had gotten worse.

All traceroutes I run to bbc.co.uk I get really bad pings at the manchester node. So its a problem there I believe.
