Last week my connection went from fairly reasonable to extremely poor. I think its because the students are back. Web pages fail to load, time out after waiting 30 secs etc. When the content of a web page finally appears it seems the stylesheet hasn't loaded so the layout is funny - clicking refresh sometimes solves it, unless the whole page fails to loads at all.

Used Dan Elwell's speed test - ping times really slow and packet loss anywhere between 5 and 50% (different every time I run it).

I'm on the 4Meg services. Usually use a wireless network but these results are when I plug computer directly in to the modem. Makes no difference.

Is it worth complaining about? Nothing has happened in the past although I sometimes get a couple of months at half price. Engineer has been out previously but blames it on an oversubscribed network so can't do anything.

Does this info from the modem help:
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 1
Downstream Frequency : 330750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -3.0 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 33.4 dB

Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test
Speed Test Report 08/10/24 19:30 - Quick test

Test conducted at: 24/10/2008 19:30:01
Test sequence: Quick test

Please note that these results are a snapshot of this particular moment. Run the test a few times to ensure maximum accuracy. Although the test has been constructed to be highly accurate, no guarantees can be made to the level of accuracy experienced in everyday use.

Test 1: Ping times to UK servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 30 ms (lower is better)

mirrorservice.org: 74 ms
demon.net: 46 ms
mirror.public-internet.co.uk: 49.8 ms

This result shows serious problems with your ping times, and should be investigated.

Test 2: Ping times to European servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 50 ms (lower is better)

apache.easy-webs.de: 64.3 ms
apache.belnet.be: 62.3 ms
uni-erlangen.de: 88.3 ms

This result is much poorer than expected and should be investigated.

Test 3: Ping times to east-coast USA servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 120 ms (lower is better)

mirror.cc.columbia.edu: 109.3 ms
mirror.candidhosting.com: 145.3 ms
mirrorgeek.com: 148.3 ms

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 4: Ping times to west-coast USA servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 160 ms (lower is better)

apache.mirrors.redwire.net: 178.3 ms
apache.oregonstate.edu: 124 ms
apache.sunsite.ualberta.ca: 185.5 ms

The results of this test indicate no problems.

Test 5: Download speeds from UK servers

Ideally, you should get a result of around 4096 Kb/s (higher is better)

smudge-it.co.uk: 811 Kb/s

This result shows serious problems with your downloads, and should be investigated.

Test 6: Upload speeds to the Speed Test Server

Ideally, you should get a result of around 400 Kb/s (higher is better)

broadbandspeedtest.net: 332 Kb/s

Your upload speeds are slightly poorer than expected.

Test 7: Packet loss en route to a UK server

Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)

mirror.inetc.co.uk: 4 %
mirror.inetc.co.uk: 6 %

Your upload speeds are slightly poorer than expected.

End of testing.

Yep, im afraid your ubr is over subscribed with students.
Its always been a problem in the area surrounding the uni.

Not alot you can do im afraid until they/when/if upgrade the ubr.

Should improve when they move 20Mbit customers to newer equipment. No timescale for that though.

Any idea what the speeds going through a UBR are? I'm in a private-sector halls, each flat has a Virgin wall-box, and I think they've all got cable broadband.
