Thanks to Spiderplant i have found that i will be on a fairly heavily loaded UBR and that i should expect a bit of a slow down in the evenings.
The UBR isnt on the list for needing an upgrade so it shouldnt be that bad.
I also live in the area where they were trialling the 50mbps service.

How can you tell if your UBR is overloaded, after you click on connection ?

You need to ask a friendly member of VM staff here, or on the virginmedia.support.broadband.cable newsgroup.

Really I need to know which UBR card you are on. For example, your UBR has 8 cards which vary from moderate to pretty busy. But regardless of the card, it's scheduled for an upgrade on 5th November.

---------- Post added at 19:00 ---------- Previous post was at 18:53 ----------

ubr21.live.blueyonder.co.ukThat one has 11 active cards, which vary from very light to pretty busy. No upgrades currently scheduled.

But you don't really need to ask me. If it's fast in the daytime, and slow in the evening (without you being STM'd), it's a fair bet your UBR card is busy.

Thx Spiderplant :)

What does an upgrade involve exactly,is it the new upgraded speed will be available,or are they making improvements for the cable users in the area ?

spiderplant

There are various kinds of upgrades, but the end result should always be better performance for all the users.

It must be different for ex-NTL customers because mine doesn't mention a particular UBR, mine says:

cpc1-brig4-*-*-****.brig.cable.ntl.com

can you still tell the UBR from this?

spiderplant
19-10-2008, 09:42
You're on Brighton UBR 4. That has 7 cards, all are lightly loaded.

I also recieve poor speeds in the evening, are the UBRs in my area oversubscribed?

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon asking for help but it would be appreciated.

Also, may I ask which UBR in my area has the least load on it and how would I go about connecting to it as opposed to being connected to say one of the worst?

@ spiderplant. As a point of interest how often would you expect some ones UBR to change?

I have had to my knowledge 4 changes in the last 6 months starting with my chronic connection on cpc1-stre3, then on to cpc4-stre3 followed by cpc2-stre4 and now my current stable (said in a whisper so as not to temp fate) connection cpc3-stre4.

Oh dear, I've started something here. No more please!

cpc2-clif6-0-0-custxxx.nott.cable.ntl.comHas 6 cards. 3 are lightly loaded, 3 are middling. No upgrades planned required at the moment.

cable.ubr03.dudl.blueyonder.co.uk
Very mixed. Upgrades to some cards planned for November 10th and 21st.

cpc2-bsfd2-0-0-custXXX.cmbg.cable.ntl.com
Very low to middling. No upgrades planned or required. I'd say if you've got performance problems it's not due to UBR load.

Also, may I ask which UBR in my area has the least load on it and how would I go about connecting to it as opposed to being connected to say one of the worst? You'd need to move house to get on a different UBR. But as I said, yours isn't bad at all.

From your "Beyond a Joke" (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33635688-beyond-a-joke.html) thread it looks like you had a signal level problem. Is it still not resolved?

Just when upgrade work occurs. The number of changes you've had is unusual.

Thanks for the reply Spiderplant, when I said a different UBR what I meant to say was a different card on the UBR, if such things are even possible.

Signal levels are fine as far as I can tell, slow speeds between 15:00-23:00 still remain but to be honest I'm not that worried as long as the connection works well for online gaming.

Thanks again :)
