virgin themselves dont offer any monitoring tool, they do suggest 3rd party tools like DU Meter.

You'll need to install something like DUmeter on each PC on your connection...

Other than that some routers can log the data

Note that with something like DUmeter, you can't really know how much you downloaded if you are using a router.

The router has a built-in firewall which rejects packets before they reach your PC. Those packets count towards your totals. Same with any uploading it does, although most routers don't send any outbound packets themselves.

Anyway, you can be STM'ed due to DOS attack on your IP, or just P2P users trying to connect to your IP.

I have a Linksys WRT54GS router with tomato firmware as dumeter is useless if theres more than one computer/laptop in the house.

have you checked for say a days usage to see the actual difference between DU meter and your routers usage monitor? im just interested to see the difference.

I haven't tried that and I dont see the need to as the router keeps a log off all data being transfered on the WAN 24/7 a day where as DUmeter would only monitor one computer and only when that device is turned on.

Also, doesn't DUMeter measure ALL LAN Interface bound data?

If you haven't already, enable cifs so usage is backed up to a computer so data is stored even if you reboot the router.

How to set up CIFS :

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_Firmware#CIFS_Client

A file will be placed inthe root of the C: drive in this example called something like tomato_rstats_0019999392.gz when you've successfully set up CIFS.

I was experimenting with pfSense scripts to check usage during STM periods and produce graphs, but I gave up since I had Be installed last week and they are truly unlimited.
