anyone in wythenshawe area on the XL broadband? what are the speeds like? are they reliable? with the traffic shaping thing will i be able to watch the odd film online about 9pm each night?
i dont really download much at all and my average monthly usage with sky has been about 16gb for the last year, like i say the odd film and maybe some live football at weekends.

With usage that low you'll have no problems with STM.

Definately wait for others opinions on the manchester situation, it could be dire.

My connection in Wythenshawe is perfect, in the past there was a problem but it has long since been sorted. I usually always get a connection above 15Mb. At peak time I can still happilly do everything I need to including films, music, downloads etc. The STM has never bothered me.

I just did this speed test for you:
Test 1: 1024K took 441 ms = 2322 KB/sec, approx 19133 Kbps, 18.68 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 477 ms = 2146.8 KB/sec, approx 17690 Kbps, 17.28 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 429 ms = 2386.9 KB/sec, approx 19668 Kbps, 19.21 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 878 ms = 2332.6 KB/sec, approx 19221 Kbps, 18.77 Mbps

cheers mate! been with sky for 6 years and had there broadband for 2 years, never really had a problem with sky. but the offer of VIRGINS VIP package was just to tempting.
20mb broadband where with sky i was lucky to get 3mb
v+ box with 80 hours recording v sky+ 40 hours
the on demand part of virgin looks interesting as well!

my big concern was the reliability of virgins BB lets hope my connection is as steady as yours!

sorry another question! what are the routers like that you get with xl bb?
i don't use wireless, would i be ok with the one they send out or can i buy a better one that will give me a more stable connection?

buy a better one. the one they send works fine but there's a bug with the firmware where sometimes for hours at a time it'll just keep disconnecting all clients.

I Live about 5 minutes from wythenshawe

My Vm BB is Dire , 150MS to UK Servers :O and my area was oversubscribed , they would not spend any money upgrading my area + They where blaming my High pings on my computer lol , When it was there over subscribed network, When i handed my 30 days Notice in , they Disconnected my internet there and then! Took them 2 weeks for them to Reconnect it!!

if you Enjoy Gaming , VIA PC , PS3 , XBOX etc , Expect High Pings

In the end i left , Don't Recommend

If your not into downloading masses of stuff then the stm wont affect you and you should be fine.
I'm on bb xl and not far from you and its steady pretty well all day every day, but as above, online gaming is not so good.

I don't do on-line gaming, i properly don't need the XL Broadband for what i use the internet for! bit it comes with the VIP package.
with sky i was getting around 3mb speed will i notice much difference when watching on-line football at the weekends with 20mb broadband?

The XL 20 compared to 3mb will fly, you should see a massive improvement.

hi i have just rang up virgin to ask what wireless router i will be getting with my xl broadband, the man on the phone said i wont be getting a router, as i have a pc near the cable box the engineer will just connect my pc directly to the cable box? is this right? he said if i want a wireless router i will have to ring up after the install and order one that costs £20 ????
i tried to tell him that its says on the website that with the VIP package its says free wireless router! but he was having none of it. :(

Replied ;)

If the XL broadband is new then yes you should get a free router if you want one

Phone back on 0845 454 1111 option 4.

They should be able to add the router to the order so the tech brings it with him

Also I would make sure they raise a complaint against the agent that gave incorrect information.

CAN someone recommend me a wireless router for a 20mb connection that will probably be wired 90% of the time but will sometimes be used for wireless

i dont do gaming.
i watch films and football online.
and do a bit of downloading!
but mainly just browse the web.

i want one that's reliable and wont need rebooting all the time! cheers.
