For the last two days on the trot, my broadband connection speeds have dropped REAL low to the point where it's unusuable
At first I thought it was traffic management, but the speeds I'm getting are much, much slower than that

I'm on the 20mb connection and right now, my top download speed is about 100kb/second

Bearing in mind this connection is shared between 3 users, it makes for....interesting web browsing (think sub Dial up, heh)

The download speeds are the same regardless of which site(s) I use, or where I download from
For instance it's taken 20 odd seconds to load Cableforum up

Using giganews servers with 20 connections and I'm getting a pitiful 117kb/second.

Anyone else having problems in the worthing area?

Do you know what the other two connections are doing???

They're not connected right now, that's the first thing I removed.

Speed test results from this forum are..

Tue, 07 Oct 2008 16:31:18 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 9299 ms = 110.1 KB/sec, approx 907 Kbps, 0.89 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 8999 ms = 113.8 KB/sec, approx 938 Kbps, 0.92 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 8718 ms = 117.5 KB/sec, approx 968 Kbps, 0.95 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 17481 ms = 117.2 KB/sec, approx 966 Kbps, 0.94 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 945 Kbps, 0.93 Mbps

Could you post the Upstream as well to give a clearer idea of whats going on and what model your modem is.;)

I'm guessing the modem is an Ambit 250, 255, 256, due to the way its set out. But yeah we do need the upsream power level. Though im guessing its its after 4, it could be over subscribtion.

Sure, upstream is

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 4
Upstream Frequency : 29200000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 45.5 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Right now it's improved ever so slightly
Using Giganews again and i'm getting....239.2kb/second

Cableforum speed test is showing

Test 1: 1024K took 4275 ms = 239.5 KB/sec, approx 1973 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 4262 ms = 240.3 KB/sec, approx 1980 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 4268 ms = 239.9 KB/sec, approx 1977 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 8531 ms = 240.1 KB/sec, approx 1978 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1977 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

All your power levels appear normal what modem is it label should be on the bottom

It's the Ambit 256 modem

Try this as it the only speed test that Virgin accept.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Remember to stop and delete the files.

i.e : 250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB

Will do, thanks!

Mistmare - 95.0kb/sec = 760
D3ddemo - 153kb/sec = 1224
Total - 1984

If thats correct your getting 2mb considering you said your on 20mb so that is less than STM for your speed.

Do you have Internet Explorer as gamefiles actually runs better in there and try to open as many files as you can and then list the transfer rates and times by 8 again.

Adam, have you checked the configuration on your modem to see if you are configured for 20Mbit or if for some reason you've a 2Mbit config file?

Just seems a bit of a coincidence that you are pegged to 2Mbit.

If you are on 20mb it should look like this below.

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000

Hmm you know, I never bothered to check the upstream/downstream rate
It appears I've been put on the small package?
Erm, I've been on 20mb since I bought it and that's what I signed up for
So what the hell? heh

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

Call VM and ask what happened to your 20Mb.

Naw
Ironically I was thinking about downgrading anyways, just not to 2mb, heh
So I regraded to 10mb, as I don't think 20mb is good value for money anyways, given the poor upload speed.
(It hurts when you come from 2.5mb upload with Bethere, heh)
