slow internet / dumb support

My internet has been a bit on the dodgy side ever since VM took over NTL.

Im on 10mb. About a month ago it went really slow, like 30k/bs and i couldnt play any games online because of a 2000 ping. I left it for about a week and it sorted itself out.

When its running well, everything its good, i download at about 1100k/bs. However, its back to being really slow again, with 2000-5000 pings. Im in an NE3X postcode, anyone else getting these issues?

Anway... So i got fed up and decided to call tech support. The guy said he knew what my problem was as soon as i had confirmed my name. Apparently my modem is old and doesnt support 10mb service.

Admittedly it is an old modem (120) but it has handled 10mb perfectly well for weeks/months on end. Im sure the modem isn't at fault. So i asked the guy if there was any other tests he could run. No he said, and im getting a new modem on Monday. However, i doubt the modem is causing the 30k downloads and 5000 pings!

I'll let you know on monday when it doesnt fix anything!

I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth myself.A new modem might just do the trick and it won't hurt to try it..If it then turns out not to be the modem then tech support and you can go from there...:)

If you had called in and spoke to me I would have replaced your modem by default for being on the 10mb tier and I would then have continued to run tests to try and find out if the are any other issues with your connection

That modem is supposed to be 10mb compatible depending on what firmware version but is quite old and rather tired, you will receive a Ambit 256 modem which is an ethernet only modem.

If you still have issues with the new modem then call back and one of my colleagues will run test on your connection.

and the last one was only about 1.1/2 meg, looked on status page
it show nothing wrong in my area or any work being do , i have just
recently had a new modem it is a ambit 256. tried games files but can never work out the speed from them. anything i can do with out calling
support ?

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.

Open a browser and in the address bar put> 192.168.100.1 password and username are both root if required.

What I want you to post is the Downstream and the Upstream plus what model the modem is for me thanks.

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running> times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

i.e : 250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB
