Problem with my Rover!!!!!

My rover keeps on over revving and continues to do so when stationery, builds up speed without foot on acceralator, and when changing up a gear its not a smooth transition, is it the timing belt or something else?

Any Ideas?

That's a bit like saying your PC has a virus and expect people to identify which OS and which Virus....

Agree with Kymmy, but (bearing in mind I spend more time inside a PC than under a bonnet) the symptoms sound similar to a slipping clutch I once had with a metro.... that was about 10 years ago though....:shrug

Advances in automobile technology does seem rather slow compared to other industries so you could try the John Cleese method of shouting at it, hitting it with a branch and telling it to stop misbehaving.

Could be anything from a faulty lamda to a misreading tps in a modern car, or if on old carbs then a sticky throttle to a fuel pump...

Well its definently not the Timing Belt (Initially loss of power through slippage then breakage stops the engine completly) or the Clutch (Engine revs but car doesn't go or car accelerates slowly whilst revving like mad) with what you have described.

Really as has been said more information is needed but I would check the throttle cable and body. and have a play with the idle adjustment screw which should be located on the throttle body.

As a stab in the dark I would say you have got a sticking throttle or the throttle body air blead is "gunked" up causing the car to over-rev at idle.

How is the car over-revving? Is it idling too quickly?

Are there any other symptoms? Engine Check light etc

slipping clutch wouldn't cause over-revving when stationary, afaik.

I used to have similar trouble when I had a Rover 620ti - turns out the idle control valve (or something) needed cleaning,

idle speed control valve if it is the problem will manifest itself at stationary position.. the rev counter will go up and down and not stay stable, but it is a very easy fix if your handy with a spanner/socket set, it is the first thing i would check tho

dont know exactly position but on my escort it is by the inlet manifold on the top of the engine, advise you look around some rover/mg forums see if you can find some pointers... need a can of carb cleaner, once its off give it a good spray inside to get rid of any carbon deposits, or soak it in the stuff over night then bolt it back on, advise leaving the battery off over night, so when you repower it in the morning the engine will recalibrate itself

My Dad's Mark 1 Seat Ibiza did this years ago. Turned out then that it was a jammed throttle.
