Hi all,

1)What, specifically, is your issue?

For the past couple of days I've been getting "Page Load Error" - "Connection Interrupted - The document contains no data -
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again." on some sites, but not on others.

For instance, I can't get to http://www.dpreview.com, or http://www.talkforest.com. I've done a tracert and they both seem to die at ge1-3-biur147.servecentric.com [212.147.130.2]. Some other sites seem to be having issues elsewhere

a) Is there a specific time that this issue is most prevalent?

No
b) How long has this issue been going on? (days, weeks, months etc)
Since yesterday

2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation?
No.

3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say?
Not yet. Wanted to establish whether it's just me or not.

4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?)
Tracert (as mentioned above). Checked through anonymous proxy and can get to the sites fine. Tried disabling firewall - no difference. Tried different DNS server - no difference.

5 Who you are and what you have
a) Where in the country are you?
Nottingham.

b) What is your operating system?
Vista 64. Getting same issue on XP PC.
c) What is your home network setup? Provide details.
Connecting wirelessly from laptop to Netgear router.
d) If you have more than one computer, is the problem occuring on all other machines?
Yes.
e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting?
Using Trend. Tried disabling it
f) Please supply a traceroute from you to www.bbc.co.uk in text format

Hi,

I'm still getting this problem. It's always on the same sites. Is anyone else experiencing this? Would it be possible for someone else who's on VM to check the links I've posted and just let me know whether they are seeing the same problem or not?

Thanks.

I can get to the sites fine

on VM

sorry but not up to speed with all the technical stuff

have you tried rebooting the modem, put it off completely for 5 mins.

I always put off comp, router and modem for 5 mins, then power up router, wait till its settled, then power up modem, wait till its settled then power up comp.

Tried the reboot (left it about 20 minutes) - no difference.

It's a bit odd that it's only certain sites I can't get to. Given that it gets part of the way along a tracert and then fails, I'd assume it's at the network end rather than mine, but if it's working for you then maybe it isn't.

but my trace to the sites could be different to yours, so maybe there is a failure at one server that you normally go through on your route.

why not try a proxy, totally random one on the vm network

I see the same behaviour as OP when tracerouting dpreview.com - i.e. it blocks after ge1-3-biur147.servecentric.com

Presumably traffic from our IP addresses are being filtered.

Solution is either to use a proxy or to contact the server administrator and convince them to unblock your specific IP address.

you could release your ip to see if that is your problem, and get a new ip

How do you force a different external IP address from VM-Blueyonder cable?
Other than switching off the cable modem for a fortnight and hope that the lease expires before you switch back on - not very practical unless you're going on holiday :-)

you could use your command prompt,

go to your Start > Run type in cmd
then in the command prompt, type in ipconfig /release
then try ipconfig /renew

reboot your system...... Disclaimer: I have never done this myself, never needed to, what this should do is release your ip address, and ask for a new one.

so when you reboot, you should have a different IP, or you could phone up CS and ask them to do it their side

No, this would only release an IP address local to the home internal network (issued from a local DHCP server, such as a router)
The external IP address which the cable modem is assigned from VM would not be changed by this procedure.

I'm a little happier now that I know it's not just me.

Works perfectly though a proxy (using the Switch Proxy plugin for FF). It's OK as a short term workaround, but as I've got no idea who's running the proxy or what they are doing with the data, I'm not going to be putting any sensitive stuff through it.

I can do a refresh DHCP on the router, but so far it's given me the same IP back every time. I'll try releasing it before I go to bed tonight and trying again tomorrow.

Edit: I noticed the mention of webcache.virginmedia.com on the other thread. I assume this is Virgin Media's own proxy - so presumably relatively safe?

I'd assume 'safer' than a public proxy server, yes - I hope so, it is the one I use if I have any problems accessing a site :)
