Hello all, I am a newbie so if this is in the wrong dept. or whatever I do apologise..
I have virgin telly in my back room and I wanted it in my front room, wasnt bothered about the channel being the same as I would either be in one room or the other..so I went to maplins, got a 2 way splitter thing, and some of those twist on plugs that screw onto the cable/splitter box...so I cut the cable, put the splitter on, joined the wires back up and plugged back in...the virgin telly in the front room is back on and working fine - but the telly in the front room only has the 5 council telly channels and I cannot find the virgin telly channels anywhere
what have/am I doing wrong ?
its starting to get to me so all info very welcome

Which cable did you cut? If its the one that comes from the wall to the cable box then thats why yuo are only getting the 5 basic channels on the other tv as you need a cable box supplied by virgin to do a split like that.
if your not bothered about both tv's showing the same channel I would surgest getting a tv sender kit, these start from about £40 for a half decent one and can be bought from argos/maplins or online. have a look at what argos have to offer here http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?pp=20&s=Price%3A+Low+-+High&x=29&y=9&storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001151&langId=-1&q=TV+SENDER

I split the cable from where it was installed at the front of my house as it runs through my front room to my back living room where my virgin box is..I now have my 2nd tv in said front room so done it that way ?
if I were to use normal coaxial cable and parts.plugged into the rf out at rear of box would that work ok ?
thanks for the replys folks

What you 'should' have done was split the cable coming out of the virgin box, then fed the resulting feeds to the 2 tellys.
There still isn't any guarantee that would work, as the signal levels are usually balanced to suit only 1 tv on installation & messing with that can stop both feeds resulting from a cable split from working, due to the attenuation in the splitter.
The RF out solution should work as an alternative, but won't give as good a picture as the main feed from the virgin box via scart connection to the telly.

What you have done is illegal!
Why don't you pay for to have a second box installed on the second TV instead of doing it on the cheap while running the risk of making your own and your neighbours installation unstable.
