Is there any reason why on Virgin media BB we get higher pings than people on other networks.
I know this is not a measured test and only an observation but the people i game with on other networks always have lower pings than the ones on virgin.

what ping do you get..
i generally get 23-36 on UK Game Servers...

My old Day Of Defeat Server i could be sitting with 5 Ping on...
it depents what your game settings are and if you are in a highly utilised area..

I play mainly on US servers and get a ping of between 170 and 230. To Euro servers its up around 70 which is higher than the other people i play with.
My game settings are usually quite high because i run an
Nvidia 8800gtx oc2

I dont have any spyware running in the back ground. I scan my pooter weekly with super anti spyware and avast pro so i think i am clear there.
Sounds like it could be the over subscription.

To most Uk game servers I would expect to get around 20, this would then vary upwards to 40 - 50 while in game. Not the best situation really. With my Uk Online I get 18 to the same servers but it never varies much, may go up to 20 :P that's on LLU fastpath. On normal LLU it's about 48, which is a bit of a difference I know.

170 - 200 Ping for playing in the states is a good ping from the UK, likewise 70ping to europe is also pretty damn good.

What exactly are you expecting?

Doesn't it depend on where in the US the server is, as the USA is a very BIG area.
170-200ms I'm assuming that's mid to west coast US because when I play on Chicago servers I get around 115ms and New York servers 95ms.

London servers generally around 18ms and Netherlands 28ms and Germany 35ms.

Although I wouldn't have done before the local UBR had its capacity upgrade. I lie, I would have done before 20Meg upgrade and or oversubscription problems.

It surely depends on the game you are playing, I just gave TASpring another go and in a game with 6 playing and 8 spectating, I had consistently the lowest ping time (200ms) and the server wasn't in the uk.

Yes some of it depends on what game you play, but most have in game setting to suit your connection type. All the games I play on-line Quake and Unreal series all use very little bandwidth (about 15KB/s max), but need a good stable connection for you to do any good.

Re: TASpring I think you'll find that it's a problem with the game that's giving you high latency, from what I can find out from doing a quick search on the `The Spring Project' webby.

What i expect it a good service from the isp i pay as i said in the OP a lot of people i play with get a lot lower ping than me i was just wondering if there was a reason for it .

Thanks for the input.
It looks like the over subscription is the problem. I just hope some of them go to the 50meg when it launches lol.

I don't know how true it was but I read somewhere on the forum that the 20Meg XL service is going to be put on the new 50Meg platform. So downgrading to 10Meg would probably be the best option to get away from the heavy downloaders.

I should mention something that gives marginally higher pings is the sometimes weird routing that happens on the formerly ntl backbone network.

3 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms osr01mort-v11.network.virginmedia.net [62.30.60.1]
4 10 ms 10 ms 9 ms osr02croy-tenge73.network.virginmedia.net [62.30.242.57]
5 10 ms 11 ms 10 ms pop-bb-b-ge-210-0.network.virginmedia.net [195.182.178.86]
6 12 ms 12 ms 11 ms nth-bb-a-so-120-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.105.64.17]
7 13 ms 13 ms 23 ms nth-bb-b-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.185.118]
8 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms tele-ic-1-as0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.184.2]
9 15 ms 14 ms 13 ms 212.250.14.126

Mortlake SW London -> Croydon S London -> Poplar E London (Right next to Telehouse et al) -> Northampton -> Northampton -> Telecity East London

Doesn't make a huge amount of sense the extra trip through 2 Northampton routers.

Yep, I had noticed the weird routing since telewest and NTL merged. Some of the Jolt servers I play on, which I know are located in the same place with have IP addresses which is only one digit apart (one ending in 119 and the other 120). The One ending in 119 get there in 11 hops and the other 12 hops, with the extra hop being another one in Wolverhampton. I use to get there in 9 hops for both, when just Telewest (bring back the Whale).
