hi

recently set up with virgin media 10mb cable broadband

im notcing lag spikes and periods of slow speed and have no idea why

i was with virgin media previously (last year) in a property not far from where i am living now and i experienced no problems

what could be causing this?

ill also add that i live in sheffield (uk), and the modem they sent also appears to be different to the modem of the previous year

Have you checked your modem signal levels?

arch101

how would i go about doing that

also the issue mostly seems to be lag spikes...like the connection jsut stops responding (not a disconnect though)

http://192.168.100.1/

Username and password are "root" without quotes. Depending on what modem you have you have to click "login" in the top left.

status looks fine, just says its operational...though i aren't entirely certain on what i should be looking out for

i checked some of the things in the topic about modem readings (at the top of this forum) and most seemed ok, but i imagine some of that stuff could be out-of-date or intended for a different modem model

Can you post

downstream receive power
downstream snr
upstream transmit power

and model of modem

arch101
31-08-2008, 18:37
downstream receive power = 19.4 dBmV

Downstream SNR : 38.1 dB

Upstream transmit Power Level : 28.5 dBmV

modem model: (not sure where to find this, so copied and pasted the first line in the infomation section on the modem gui, no idea if its the model though)

Cable Modem : DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant

downstream receive power = 19.4 dBmV to high

Downstream SNR : 38.1 dB

Upstream transmit Power Level : 28.5 dBmV to low

modem model: (not sure where to find this, so copied and pasted the first line in the infomation section on the modem gui, no idea if its the model though)

Cable Modem : DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant

Your downstream is to high
Your Upstream is to low.

You need to call Tech Support.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 option 3 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

ok, and they should be able to adjust those numbers/readings/power levels?

ill also add that the slow periods i also mentioned those usually only appear around peak hours mostly (like now) and up untill 1am or so, but earlier in the day it seems fine, hopefully ccan get this sorted though as i was with vm last year and literally 2 streets away from where i am now and had no issues (this was on 4mb before the 10mb upgrade) :/

It will require a Tech visit.

just a though that came to mind....i don't suppose attaching the old modem from my previous year with vm would make a difference? or am i right to assume that i can only use the modem supplied as it stores user and service specific details within it

Sounds like the power levels on the network to your modem are not set up properly and changing the modem won't make much difference.

VM's tech will come over and either adjust levels in the cabinet to your home by switching the tap you are on or apply some attenuation to the feed in your home at the box.

Either way they'll have to sort it, and sort it they will!

Agree with the above. I thought your levels may be dodgy!

Hope you get a quick resolution.

Your old modems only use is as a paperweight, as its MAC address will no longer be valid for use on the Virgin network.

That reminds me, I've got a lot of paperweights in the loft that I should bin.

If you take to the recycling depot then break the screw connector with pliers so no unscrupulous person can try to resell them on Ebay.;)

the tech will come up and fix the power in the street box :D
or outside your home

ok i just got off the phone with tech support

ofcourse they're trying to pull that theres no problem their end and my powe levels are fine :S

apparantly im on a telewest network and not an ntl network, which uses different power levels or something

so im still wondering what the issue is :/ tech guys meant to be sending some update to the modem at the moment, is the telewest stuff he said actually true? he said on the telewest network anything up to 40 on the downstream power level is fine

oh and apparantly im still on 4mb not 10mb and havent had the upgrade yet.....to me that seems odd considering i only bought this deal 2 weeks ago and it was advertised at 10mb on their website, surely thats false advertising? im well aware it did use to be a 4mb but when somethings advertised at 10mb...you expect to be getting 10mb not the old 4mb deal

oh and ill also add that the downstream power level that he had for my line was different to the one on my gu (which i tried to explain to him), so not sure whats goin on there either

Axegrinder

Maybe upto 40 for the D/S SNR but for telewest the D/S Power level is -12/+12dbmv, iirc.

SNR is between 29 and 50

so...the tech guy i talked to was wrong?

this is getting fun :/ note he said he'd send some update and call back afterwards, he also said it would take 15 mins ...this was over an hour ago

he also seemed to think the upstream power level was fine to

I don't think I've ever received a call back from any CS or TS from any company that has promised one. (whether it's VM, BT, anyone of a number of ADSL providers etc.)

yeah i called back and managed to convince them to send an engineer so should be one coming on thursday

Well he was wrong about the power levels and I do the same job as him and I would have booked a Tech on your first call;)

the downstream power level seems to of made its way up to 20.2 dBmV at the moment (1:40 am) and i have a 500 or so ping/latency in a game that i usually hvoer at around 170 ms

upstream power is also down a bit at 27.0dbmv

so no idea whats going on, guess ill just wait to the enginear gets here and hope that sorts it

I previously stated your power levels are way out of spec, that is whats going on.;)

and claim for ur crap broadband service since u had it installed :D

clearly that was something that was never checked once this was all fitted an up and running

i am still curious as to why im on 4mb speed still though, when they advertise the L broadband deal as 10mb on their website now

the upgrade mabey hasnt took place yet ?

yeah...im aware of that, but when they're advertising it as 10mb on their official website....

although im guessing theres some tiny text on the deal explaining the upgrade process

LaineY

right thats a tad strange
because as far as i was aware...

the only services they offered was
M 2mb
L 4mb
XL 20MB

i didnt know they were advertising the 10 meg already
its not 100% rolled out yet according to the Even Faster page..

aint that false advertising...

arch101
03-09-2008, 17:08
thats my point, it appears to be advertised as "up to 10mb" but that jsut means you might not get the full 10mb not that you might be capped at 4mb and not even capable of getting the full 10mb yet

as back when it was a 4mb deal it would of said "up to 4mb"

arch101

just a quick update (enginear comes tomorrow)

getting stupidly high pings in online games at the moment this only ever seems to occur later in the day though

if it was purely down to the power levels would it not be a constant thing?

lag spikes still happening to
