Been getting massively slow communications all night long - since 5pm today in the Glasgow area.

Tried to contact the Cable Modem Info page and, guess what...

Network Timeout

The operation timed out when attempting to contact 192.168.100.1.

The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.
* Could the server be experiencing high demand or a temporary failure? Try again later.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
* Still having trouble? Consult your network administrator or Internet provider for assistance.

Any ideas? I'm on the 20Mb service.

Are you on XP go to the DOS screen and put in > netstat -an <and check how many listening and established connections you have and try pinging www.bbc.co.uk (http://www.bbc.co.uk)

Hit CTRL+F5 to force a reload of the page!
Are you using Firefox by any chance?
reason I ask is it does that a lot to me too, or it'll come up a blank page and say its done on the status bar, when obviously it hasnt done or the page would have loaded!

Sorry got sidetracked with the netstat...

I had 11 listening connections, 32 established and 7 timewait

First time I pinged the bbc site it could not be found, second time it timed out ... right up to the fourth time out and then it said there was a 100% data loss.

I'm on XP with Firefox

You have a spyware problem as in XP if nothing is running the should no established and no more than 7 listening on average.

download and run this adaware 2008 http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

or AVG8 free edition http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

download them update them and run them.

It has nothing to do with the server it is whats on your machine.

OK - I already use AdAware regularly, run Ccleaner regularly, Spybot regularly and SuperAntiSpyware...

Surely there shouldn't be anything still lurking!

I have found that for a few months now that Firefox plays up a bit when loading webpages.

A while ago, forums was loading strange (for example a users advatar was appearing instead of the forum links and every member had screwed up advatars like the person below had the 1 of the user above etc) I really do not know what it is that is causing this, just a few minutes ago, I clicked on the link to bring me to the "Virgin Media Internet Services" board, but just got a white screen and the status bar said "Done" a CTRL+F5 did the trick on loading it properly though!

Do a netstat -an and post the results, I think many people on here will say if you have that many connections in XP it will slow you down.

I use Firefox all the time and never have to force it to open.

I'm guessing you've tried the obvious,
Like try your connection without the router in place? And whilst on this subject, is your router wireless or wired? And if its wireless is it secure?

Jumping on the netstat bandwagon here :p:

netstat -b will show you the running programs ;)

Example :

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State PID
TCP :1036 localhost:2002 ESTABLISHED 248
[LogMeInSystray.exe]

TCP :2002 localhost:1036 ESTABLISHED 2124
[LogMeIn.exe]

TCP :2393 77.242.193.137:https ESTABLISHED 2124
[LogMeIn.exe]

TCP :2399 by1msg3245813.gateway.edge.messenger.live.com:18
63 ESTABLISHED 2056
[pidgin.exe]

Hi

Ran the netstat -b and discovered a few lines referring to Kservice which I gather is to do with Channel 4 OD - stopped that from running and the listing is a lot less cluttered.

I can't copy out of the Dos box for some reason so can't show you what's coming up. Just Firefox, iTunes and AppleMobileDevice.

I stopped the Kservice with CTRL ALT DEL so will need to find a better fix than that - but thanks for the help.

Copy from the DOS box:
Right click in the DOS box and click mark, click & drag till the text you want it highlighted, and just press ENTER, this will copy the text into the clipboard.

Stopping services:
Goto your start menu, then click on Control Panel, double click on Administrative Tools, then on Services, locate the service you want to stop, right click it and choose Stop, then if you want to disable it completely, right click on it and choose Properties (the bold text), then from the Startup type choose Disabled and hit apply!
Alternatively, you could just set it to manual and this will make sure it only runs when you have the main Channel 4 OD program opened :)

Same problem here for the last 2 nights. Yesterday the net slowed down to about 1/100th it's normal speed from about 10 pm until about 2pm when I turned the PC off in disgust. Data was only being sent in tiny packets about once every 30 seconds and most web pages were coming up Page Load Error. It's just done it again tonight although thankfully only for a short period.

I'm in Doncaster, S Yorks btw.
