Setting up Internet.. Weird Problem

Basicly i moved into a new house.. its already set up with virgin media.. but its olddd modem .. the modem is Motorola Surf Board SB4100..... i dont have a router yett.. bascily i have 3 laptops which are ALL windows vista... when i connect directly from modem it connects but not to internet.. it says local only connection. now i then connected to my xbox 360.. when i run the test the ip adress bit fails...

but the strangest part is that when i connect to my fourth computer,, which is a desktop with windows XP.. it connects to itnernet.

anyidea whats wrong? any help would be appriceated

Was the modem there when you moved in? In most cases it's no use and you'll need VM to send you a new one; I haven't heard of them provisioning left over modems to new customers.
