Am I getting the speed I'm paying for??

Have recently gone from the large package on Virgin to the XL package so should be getting 20mbps. To be totally honest I have not noticed ANY difference in speed. One thing to add at this stage (If it makes a difference) I am an old telewest customer so have a SB4100 SURFboard.

Get speed tests off them 2. Also, download 3 game files off Virgin Media game files then add up your speeds.

You need a replacement modem as the Motorola SB4100 is not classed as 20Mb capable.

Test 2: 1024K took 1932 ms = 530 KB/sec, approx 4367 Kbps, 4.26 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 2724 ms = 375.9 KB/sec, approx 3097 Kbps, 3.02 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 2534 ms = 808.2 KB/sec, approx 6660 Kbps, 6.5 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 4807 Kbps, 4.69 Mbps

3rd test... Don't know what I'm doing on that one. Get to a list of folders but don't appear to be able to download anything.

2nd post... So, the problem could lie with the modem? Will have to ring Virgin and see what they say about this.

Read another post somewhere else that says the 4100 is not capable of 20mbps HOWEVER when I go to the following webpage (apologies, can't remember how to do links):

There's a drop down which tells you if you need a new modem. It says "You are already on super fast 20Mb. Thanks for checking, but you don't need to do anything, you are on our fastest service."

Can I just ask at this stage (and maybe I should've mentioned earlier) if a wireless router would affect the speed in any way. I have a netgear 108mbps router between the cable modem and PC (PC is connected via ethernet not wireless) The wife has a laptop that she goes online with. Would this cap the speed in any way?

try the tests without the router in place to see if it does?

AndyG you need to call Tech Support as that modem is not classed as 20Mb capable and is one of our older models.

It is completely free to call and you will get a new modem couriered to your door at no cost to yourself.

Speedtests will resolve nothing until you get a new modem that is capable of 20Mb.

Are you on USB by any chance as you will not get above 6/7Mb anyway and you should only be connected via an Ethernet cable.

That's because the page has been modified for the 4-10Mb upgrade. Just follow whydoIneedatech's advice for a replacement.

Yep.. 4100 doesnt support 20mb...

phone them for free and get it replaced :) i had that issue :)

Yes you are on 20Mb and it assumes you have the correct modem, just call and you might even speak to me:p:

I rang Virgin up last night and told them I'd recently upgraded to the XL service and had been advised that the modem I have doesn't support 20mbps so they are sending me out a new modem in the next 5 working days! So, thank you very much for this - I look forward to experiencing the extra speed!
