Hey guys,

Weird issue, my ping times are very weird.

Every 3 or 4 hops i get a sort of small spike.

I'm in Northern Ireland thats why my pings are quite high. You can see the little pikes below.

Does everyone get this?

ICMP is a de-prioritised protocol, you get a reply when the router has time to reply to it. If it doesn't have time, it never replies. This is why you see a delay or a timeout sometimes.

But from my parents ADSL i get a constant 30ms?

Hi BuckleZ,

Yes my pings are also very erratic, especially peak times. From what I've found out its probably due to over capacity on the UBR your connected to and you'll have to wait for a capacity upgrade (not the 4 to 10Meg upgrade, maintenance for capacity like this:- http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/maintenanceissue.do;jsessionid=FBB72459364BD1E14EA 09F1A5A45694F.jsps304p:28009?ticket=9612 )

If you have a look at this thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33628180-can-you-post-ping-plotter-image.html and you'll see it's a common problem across the virgin Media network. If you have a look at Slowcoachs posts at the end of the thread for after capacity upgrade results.

As for ICMP ping requests. If you download Pingplotter software http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html and set in options packet style UDP (which most games use) and I'll find it will mimic what you get in game. Remember to keep a log of all corresponsed with Virgin Media and results you may do, so if you feel you're getting a bum deal you're got info to hand to back your case up.

Hope this helps.

please don't judge your connection from a ping ...

Why not. When I do Ping Plotter tests it mimics what happens in games. I don't run both at the same time, but when I run into problems playing and disconnect from the server and load up ping plotter to keep a record of the problem and it's the same results as in the game `lags spikes and packet loss' which makes playing First Person Shooters very difficult.

When my `perfect for online gaming' XL broadband connection doesn't allow you to play online games, am I meant to do nowt about it. BTW `perfect for online gaming' was dropped from tha sales pitch by VM sometime at the end of last year http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33627782-virgin-media-and-perfect-online-gaming.html.
