Torrent Speed

Hi, I have the basic Virgin 2MB broadband. It works great and downloads torrents really fast, however, after it has completed the downloads and I exit bittorrent, my net speed slows RIGHT down, and usually stops working all together. This tends to happen for a few hours.
Why is this and how can I stop it?
Also, are there any plans to upgrade the speed of the 2Mb service?
