Long story made short

So yesterday I reinstalled Windows XP Prof (Sp1) and the modem wasn't recognize by the computer although the onboard sound and amoungst other devices not being recognize as well, my thought was as its an older server pack it may not recognize a lot of devices. So I said to myself Sp2 should help with that as it is the average server pack, a part from Sp3.

So my step-father phoned up vm and basically made us do unecessary tasks that cause more annoyance than before. I originally knew we needed another installation CD. That being said, it had been a while that I had used the ntl installation CD, approximately 2years and I didn't find out until last night that the modem doesn't require the CD to install it once again.

After about an hour or so over the phone speaking to none Uk born n bred people with strange accents which made the task even better!
We were smack bam right where we were on square one.

My question is, could anyone assist me in installing my modem again on my other computer with basic english as I've only had 2 and a bit hours sleep.
If there is any questions that you may have please don't hesitate to ask however I am not the greatest acknowledge person about computers but I am most certainly willing to learn.

Any help would be appriecated

I take it you are connecting your Modem to your PC via USB? Ethernet would be a better bet assuming your PC has an Ethernet port and doesn't need any drivers apart from those that came with the Ethernet controller which should be with the Motherboard drivers

Nope, Ethernet. Im currently using another downgraded computer that I used a home made network called Belkin, the network seems to be fine as I can still use it on this computer. I haven't got the motherboard drivers as I had previously bought the computer from a friend.

Try this Intel Utility (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=861&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21)

Then once you know, you will probably need to get the Intel Chipset installer from HERE (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=816&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21)

Also have you installed SP2/SP3 yet?

Yep installed Sp2 3am this morning.

should be able to. It is an exe file.

By the sounds of it the chipset you have in newer than XP (maybe even SP2) which is why you are having problems with the E-Net adapter

Right, firstly I've just installed it and its restarted. My question is, what has it done? for my understanding :) and secondly what else is there that I should do to solve my modem problem? Also I've just tried the sound and unfortunately it doesn't allow sound still. :shocked:

Got to My Computer, right click and go to properties (or go into Control Panel and System) Click on the Hardware Tab and select 'Device Manager'

Do you see any yellow question marks?

Hmm, definately missing some drivers then.

Try right clicking on the Ethernet Controller one and select uninstall. Once it has disappeared, click on the little computer icon with the magnifying glass over it (or click 'Action' and 'Scan for hardware changes')

Done all that is above.
The result was, "new device detected" but it needs the software that of which requires a CD? or should I bring it downstairs and use the internet option and allow it to search on the net for.. updates as such? Currently Im downloading Sp3 and the Video Controller Driver onto USB.

Problem is without the Ethernet Controller, you won't be able to get online. Kind of a bit Catch 22.

If you look on the back of the PC is the ethernet socket in the bit where the USB/Keyboard/Mouse sockets are or is it on a plug in card?

That will be why the Intel Drivers haven't worked. You are going to have to open it up and find out who makes the card

Na its not got a slot of its own, its with the mouse,keyboard etc.
Unfortunately the picture is to big to host. :(

Alright I'll do so once my pc has installed Sp3, It's currently installed the Video Controller, it just needs to be restarted to take full effect (After Sp3 Install I will reboot).

Did another reboot, program works & now I bought the Belkin Adapter with my computer, saves time traveling from pc to pc. I'll upload Info in a moment.

It works the sound that is, remaining yellow marks are
- Ethernet Controller
- Network Controller
- PCI Modem

Which is all the same thing really. How would this be solved?

how come? :o PCI Modem is one of the yellow question marks ;_;

But that is a modem for dial up!

The 'Ethernet controller' is the socket used by Virgin Broadband

Also, right click on the yellow question mark network controller and uninstall it. Then refresh as earlier. It may not come back

I take it that nobody informed the OP about Everest, if he downloaded this and run it on the computer, it would not only display all hardware, but also provides links to download the drivers too!
