View Full Version : I swear I'm not in Ireland!

The internet insists I'm in Ireland. That's Amazon, Ebay, Google, and even the BBC. BBC Iplayer won't trust me. What do i do? I want to watch TopGear and search UK pages. Google is serving me adverts for Irish services. That's no good to me.

This problem has persisted for a while.

While I have found some information on this issue, none of it has explained the cause or provided a concrete fix, so I hope that by pooling together the information we have, a solution can be found.

Technical Information:
IP Range: 86.0.0.0 - 86.31.255.255.
IP leased to NTL Internet by RIPE.NET which owns the complete range.
RIPE's database points to GB as the country.

Location:
Physical: M33 - Cheshire. Ex-NTL area.
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ points to: Nottingham, J8.
The URB (cpc*-bagu*-0-0-cust***.bagu.cable.ntl.com) points to my local area.

Hardware/Software:
Std. Issue NTL broadband cable modem (non-motorola).
Netgear WPN824 Router
Windows Vista/Windows XP/Linux/Wii. All have the same issue.

Possible Causes:

I have no idea. Why do some sites know I'm in the UK - ie: http://whatismyipaddress.com yet others such as google don't?

It cannot be a software issue as even my Wii has the same problem. It may be a hardware issue, but I cannot see how, as it was fine before.

Solutions:

Temporary:
Renew IP address
1) Reboot Modem
or
2) Change your Computer/Router's MAC, then Renew IP (Reboot Modem)

Of course, I keep getting an IP in the same range.

Use A Proxy:
Use Virgin Media's Proxy by changing it to webcache.virginmedia.com:8080 either in the browser, or if you're lucky enough, on your router. A browser proxy will only work for that browser - which is a pain.

THE SOLUTION:

???

I know this is an information overload - but it doesn't help to be vague. It'd be good if we could find something common.

Please post any further information, fixes, ideas, help requests etc below. Has Tech-Support got an answer?

May i request that a moderator makes this a sticky, or something similar, while a solution is being found - as I imagine many people are being affected - but don't know where to turn.

Thanks.

Good luck.

:welcome: to the forums.

Try calling tech support. See this (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33633314-google-com-goes-to-google-ie.html) thread, and this (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33633594-why-does-whole-internet-think-i.html) one...

Google web accelerator may be implicated.

Thank's Kevin.

I've popped in a few times when my friend google has led me here, but I thought if I posted about this one It might help a little more!

I've read both those threads:

Thread 1 (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33633314-google-com-goes-to-google-ie.html) - confirms the problem appears to be with the 86.x.x.x IP range.

The proxy solution is the best work around, but on a multi-pc network, it's only effective if your router supports it - else you have to reconfigure each software on each PC seperately.

If someone does need to desperately watch eastenders though follow the link above, and the instructions to add the virginmedia proxy.

Thread 2 (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33633594-why-does-whole-internet-think-i.html) - I can confirm google accelerator is not the culprit this time. This does confirm that the URBs appear correct though.
