I am really getting fedup with STM.
I am on what 20mb connection and i am neally getting STM every other day.
My connection slows right down, this is so dam unfair!!
So most evenings i pay what £36 for a 2mb connection.
I dont use any torrents or anything like that
I mean i just downloaded updates for CS3, vista, and my windows xp sp3 laptop, as well as updates for c&c3, general linux home file server updates, and now i cant download any faster than 200kb/s.
I dam well pay for 20mb connection i SHOULD be allowed to use this when i want! It's not my fault VM over subscribed or cant sort out their crappy network. When i signed upto 20mb there was no MENTION of any STM.
I download my servers backups to my PC as i have alot of important data on them, they can be around what 500mb total a week.
Most days i hardly download anything yet my traffic goes to 200kb/s, or goes so slow it's not worth it anymore.
If i could i would gladly change my phone to BT and go with BE as i can get faster speeds than what i get with VM, but quite frankly i dont want to pay for the BT install, just means more pain in trying to get that sorted than it's worth!
i don't blame you, i'm getting fed up of it aswell

Oh great another STM thread - I had forgotten all about it.
Have you considered letting VM know (http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/contact/complaint-feedback.php) how you feel?

I'm beginning to wonder at what point the mods will start merging them together...

I'm beginning to wonder at what point the mods will start merging them together... They wouldnt get anything else done - Perhaps thats why they need new mods.
Its all so boooooooring.

Is your upload speed around 700? If so you are not under STM and the slowness is just VM crapiness.
well if it is vm crapiness, maybe if you tried informing vm of the issue they would be able to identify and remedy it. theres no point in coming on moaning about it and not actually doing anything to resolve it.
if your speed goes down to 200kb/s this i not traffic management as this would limit you to 5meg on a 20meg connection.
for all of vm faults, and i do agree they have plenty, they do eventually seem to be doing something about the over subscription issues, and some areas have had these faults cleared.
if you are having a problem with it, contact them, no matter what company it is, they cant resolve an issue until tou tell them its there.

It's strange how now it's gone 9pm the speeds are back to around 10mb. and before that i had a speed of around 4mb or less

I'm fairly sure that your upstream power level is too high.
If you contact Tech Support and mention your reading, I suspect they'll arrange a tech visit to correct it.

a little. but it shouldn't really make a noticable difference tbh.

Your upstream is maxing out, ideally should be below 55dbmv, so that is a definite factor why your speeds are so slow.

You are not me, how do you know I haven't contacted VM? In fact I have no issue with my speed at the moment. Moan? You call that moaning? I call that identifying what kind of problem which is causing the slowness. Crapiness? Yes, just browse round this forum. People come here for help, of course they moan when they are not getting thier money's worth, don't you?

That Upstream power level is on the high side and a call to Tech Support may be in order on 151.

Why not arrange a backup solution at your datacentre so you don't have to use your residential connection allowance? 10Gb will set you back a mere £5!

agree with u 100% this smt thing is very annoying i to end up on a 5mbit connection most the time, they may aswell call this a 5mbit connection...

Roll Up! Roll Up!
£36 a month for a 20 minute ride.
Invite your friends and we'll give you a cut of the money!

.
LoL exactly gary £36 a month for 20 mions which usually lasts me longer the 20 because i dont offen get full 20mbit download from many places so it usually take s abit longer to his the 3GB but ive hit it basically every day or every other day and by the time im on normal 20mbit again im sleeping.
i hope enough ppl leave to make VM realise their mistake in this stm rubbish, and more companies like bt laugh at them for them on tv to annoy them more, charge more then the adsl companies for u not to use ur connection, if i was close enough to a adsl exchange to get full 24mbit on bethere id be on bethere pro with a 2,5mbit upload, but for me adsl sucks so i have no option,.. VM service is amazing but the STM is just...
well if they dont remove the stm soon i will downgrade to the 2mbit, no point paying for the top speed and having 5mbit most of the time

I choose to download my site backups as i want an archive to, we do have offsite backups but nothing beats having a physical data copy of it sitting by you :)
I upload a fair ammount of media to my server and flickr as i do freelance photography.
But yer i do alot of legit downloading, i'm not one of these people who dam well whore my connection. So now im stuck on a STM after doing a bit of downloading. Whats the dam point in a 20mb connection if i can use it for a whole 20mins and then be screwed for the rest of the day!
I phoned tech support and they said i quote "EVERYTHING checked out fine and they can't see a reason why i would get slowness when not STM."
They said they could send me a new modem is it worth me asking for that?
If it's this bad with 20mb whats it gonna be like with bloody 50mb when that rolls out!!!
The only reason im with VM is because of the betetr speeds, ADSL speed in my area aint that good.

So just downgrade to the 2mbit and save 20+ quid a month :)
i will do at the end of september :) but then i am even more on a 1mbit with the 2mbit connection 300mbytes of download is just stupid amount ... only people who literaly ust surf web pages and dont really download have the 2mbit.. 2mbit should be no slowing ur net speed down no matter how much u download.. 20mbit ppl get slowed down to 5mbit anw vm are taking this stm thing to far its getting stupid

Whats the point of having a bloody 20mb connection if VM wont dam well allow us to fully use what we pay for!
So just downgrade to the 2mbit and save 20+ quid a month :)
Even better just call retentions and get a discount. At the moment new customers can get 20 meg for £26/month for 12 months, so you can use that to demand the same.

Dependant on area, Retentions are no longer allowed to give out big discounts anymore, for instance, if your in nottingham and u ring up saying u want to cancel just to get a deal, you wont get it.

if you hit the stm most of the time like you say you are easily doing more than 10gb a day or 300+ a month which is a bargain imo

should be way for every area really
If your out of contract though and they refuse to do you the same deal as new customers why not just terminate contract then re-connect on a cheaper tarrif, is everyone living in la la land lateley or what :S.
